Goza Mat
Goza Mat
A Goza Mat is a Tokuno-themed decorative floor mat — a tatami-style covering used by players to dress house floors, vendor stalls, and themed rooms in East Asian styles. Goza Mats are produced by two routes: player Tailoring (introduced with Samurai Empire in 2004) and Cleanup Britannia reward turn-ins (a redemption category for high-grade decorative variants). The 9-variant family — split between Brocade Goza, plain Goza, and Square Goza in east and south orientations — is the largest single decorative-furniture set in Tailoring's craft catalogue and is the standard "Asian flooring" for player housing.
The 9-variant family
Tailoring craftables (introduced with Tailoring in the Samurai Empire publish):
| Variant | Skill | Cloth | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Goza (east) | 55 | 25 | Plain mat, east-facing weave |
| Goza (south) | 55 | 25 | Plain mat, south-facing weave |
| Brocade Goza (east) | 55 | 25 | Brocade-textured |
| Brocade Goza (south) | 55 | 25 | Brocade-textured |
| Square Goza (east) | 55 | 25 | Square shape, east weave |
| Square Goza (south) | 55 | 25 | Square shape, south weave |
| Square Goza (no border) | 55 | 25 | Square shape, plain edge |
| Square Brocade Goza (east) | 55 | 25 | Square + brocade |
| Square Brocade Goza (south) | 55 | 25 | Square + brocade |
Skill / materials: all 9 variants share the same 55 Tailoring requirement and 25 cloth cost. They are not BOD-accepted (BODs cover armor and clothing, not decorative items).
Cleanup Britannia variants
Cleanup Britannia offers rare high-value Goza Mat variants as a 10,000-point redemption tier:
| CB Goza variant | Points |
|---|---|
| Goza Mat (Decorative — Cleanup variant) | 10,000 |
Cleanup-issued Goza mats carry rare hues (including cleanup-exclusive turquoise, ochre, deep red) that the player-Tailoring versions cannot produce. They are the collector grade of the family and trade for 0.5m–1m gp on player vendors.
Player housing use
| Use case | Why Goza fits |
|---|---|
| Tatami floor | The plain Goza covers a full tile and lays flat; tile a room of any size |
| Asian-themed shop | Pair with Tokuno Islands decor (paper lantern, sake set, samurai armor on stand) for an authentic vendor stall |
| Meditation room | Square Goza (no border) covers a single tile — perfect for a 1×1 alcove |
| Brocade for richness | Brocade Goza variants display a textured pattern visible from screen-zoom — better than plain in shoebox layouts |
| East-vs-South weave | Match orientation to room layout: east-facing weave reads "horizontal," south reads "vertical" |
Collection-completion
Players collecting complete sets of Tokuno decorative items typically aim for all 9 player-craftable Goza variants plus the Cleanup Britannia rare-hue variant for a 10-piece set. Many veteran display houses on Pacific, Atlantic, and Catskills shards feature complete Goza-set rooms.
Historical note
The Goza Mat family entered the game with Samurai Empire in October 2004 — its design echoes traditional Japanese goza (ござ) rush mats, the woven sedge floor coverings used in pre-tatami Japan. The naming is canonical to the expansion's authenticity-of-detail policy.
