Britannian Royal Guard

A folio of the realm

Britannian Royal Guard

The Britannian Royal Guard — abbreviated RBG, occasionally rendered as the Royal Britannian Guard — is the elite knightly order sworn to protect the crown of Britannia and to defend the realm against its enemies on the field of battle. The institution descends in unbroken line from the Order of the Silver Serpent, the original monastic knightly order of the realm, and through several name changes (the Royal Knights, then the Royal Britannian Guard, then the Britannian Royal Guard) has remained the canonical military arm of the throne since the founding era. It is named for the Silver Serpent — the heraldic symbol of Britannia itself — and its members were traditionally housed and trained at Serpent's Hold, the southern paladin city.

In modern Ultima Online, the Britannian Royal Guard exists in two distinct forms: as a historical NPC institution within the canonical lore, and as a player-driven multi-shard role-playing theme sponsored and managed by Event Moderators (EMs) on participating servers.

History

The Order of the Silver Serpent

The Order of the Silver Serpent was Britannia's original knightly order — a monastic brotherhood sworn to protect Lord British and to defend the kingdom from external threats. The Order was the closest, most devoted protectors of the crown, and the institution carries forward into Ultima Online from the single-player Ultima games on which UO is based. Notable members of the Order in the lore include Geoffrey and Dupre — both companions of the Avatar in the single-player canon, and both fixtures in modern Britannian historical record.

The Order was traditionally housed and trained at Serpent's Hold, the paladin city on the southern islands. Their derived name reflected the Silver Serpent — the symbol of the realm itself — woven into the order's heraldry.

The name changes

For reasons that were never made entirely public — though there were hints that it was a copyright issue rather than an in-fiction event — the Order's name had to be changed to the Royal Knights. Eventually the institution was renamed once more to the Royal Britannian Guard. The continuity of identity through the renames is preserved in the lore: the same knightly order, the same protective oath, the same ranks and lineage, but with its banner formally rebadged.

On certain shards, the original Order of the Silver Serpent continues as a player-run guild dedicated to carrying on the older tradition — a cosmetic distinction with no mechanical or canonical-status implication, but a deliberate role-played continuity.

The Minaxian campaign

The defining historical campaign of the Royal Britannian Guard in modern UO lore is the long Minaxian conflict of 2003–2004 — the events that played out across more than a year of EM-driven storyline arcs documented through the BNN (Britannia News Network) bulletin system. The campaign opened with Lord British's appointment of a new Commander of the Royal Guard (the recently-arrived Commander seen at Lord British's side during the Moonglow defense), continued through ambushes, captures, escapes, the search for cures to Minaxian poisons, and ultimately closed with the trial and death of Keeonean (Minax's lieutenant) and the memorial service for Lord Blackthorn, before transitioning into the later events of the Tokuno troubles and the Pirates of Britannia arcs.

The campaign serves as the canonical demonstration of the Royal Guard's mission: front-line action against the realm's enemies, executed in coordination with Lord British, the Britannian Council, and the Town Cryers' bulletin network.

The BNN campaign chronology (2003 – 2008)

The Royal Britannian Guard's modern lore is documented in detail across roughly two dozen BNN articles. The chronology, in order:

The player-run RBG theme

In parallel with the canonical NPC institution, the Royal Britannian Guard is one of the longest-running multi-shard role-playing themes in UO. The structure varies from server to server, but on each participating shard the theme is EM-sponsored and managed, providing a formal in-fiction framework for player participation in the canonical knightly order.

Participating servers

The RBG theme is officially supported on five shards:

Other shards have informal or unofficial role-play groups operating under the RBG banner, but only these five carry the EM-sponsored designation.

Well-known chapters

The major active chapters maintain their own websites and recruitment channels:

Each chapter operates with its own ranks, ceremonial regalia, role-play schedule, and recruitment standards, but maintains common identity around the canonical lore and the EM-managed sponsorship.

Joining and ranks

The participating chapters operate by EM-curated recruitment with standard knightly progression — typically Recruit → SquireKnight → Lieutenant → Captain, with chapter-specific variations. New members generally complete a brief role-played onboarding (training-tournament participation, oath-of-service ceremony, and a probationary patrol period) before earning Knight rank.

Equipment and artifacts

Several Champion Spawn Replica artifacts and EM Event items carry the Royal Guard branding and serve as canonical RBG regalia:

Royal Guard Survival Knife

A Champion Spawn Artifact (specifically a Replica) introduced as part of the post-Publish 57 replica artifact set. The knife carries the special-move pair Shadowstrike (primary) and Disarm (secondary), making it a versatile assassin/tackle weapon for stealth-focused builds. It drops as a Replica from Champion Spawn loot, available across all facets that host Champion Spawns.

Royal Guard Investigator

The original Royal Guard Investigator is a purple cloak distributed during an EM Event — a one-time Original drop tied to a specific role-played narrative. The cloak is blessed and serves as a chapter-defining cosmetic for the Catskills RBG and other shards' chapters that received the original distribution.

The replica version was introduced on December 18, 2008 as a Champion Spawn Artifact. The replicas are not blessed (the originals are), weigh 1 stone, and are stackable in vendor inventory — distinguishing the replica grade from the original event-distributed version. Replicas drop alongside the broader Champion Spawn Artifact pool.

Royal Guard (Catskills) Suit

A complete five-piece Royal Guard suit set — chest, gloves, gorget, leggings, helm — distributed during a Catskills EM Event. The suit pieces are color-coordinated with the RBG insignia and serve as ceremonial regalia for the Catskills chapter's higher ranks.

Notable named figures

  • The Commander of the Royal Guard — the canonical leader of the order; appointed by Lord British in September 2003 (recently arrived in Moonglow). Survived a poisoning attempt by Minaxian agents and led the campaign against Keeonean and the Minaxian forces.
  • Clainin — royal mage of the court whose initial attempts to cure the Commander failed, leading to the bargain with the Mysterious Stranger.
  • KeeoneanMinax's lieutenant; ambushed the Royal Guard detachment in Ilshenar, was eventually captured, tried, and executed.
  • Dupre — historical (single-player Ultima) member of the order; honored figure in modern lore.
  • Geoffrey — historical Knight; Avatar's companion in the single-player canon.

Strategy notes

  • For role-players: the RBG is the formal point of entry into Britannian knightly role-play. The five EM-sponsored shards maintain the canonical chapter; new role-players should contact the Catskills chapter's recruitment channel directly via their website for onboarding.
  • For lore enthusiasts: the BNN article corpus is the canonical primary source. The October–November 2003 sequence (Wants You / Ambushed / Seeking a Cure / Finding a Cure / Bargains with Mysterious Stranger / Keeonean Trial) is the dramatic core of the modern Royal Guard arc.
  • For collectors: the Royal Guard Survival Knife and the Royal Guard Investigator (replica) are accessible Champion Spawn artifacts; the original Royal Guard Investigator and the Catskills Suit pieces are EM-event-distributed and rarer in circulation.
  • For PvP/PvM tradition: the Survival Knife's Shadowstrike + Disarm move pair is one of the more efficient stealth-and-tackle combinations in the artifact catalog — a respectable practical weapon as well as a ceremonial RBG piece.
