Moonglow

A folio of the realm

Moonglow

Moonglow is the City of Honesty — the great seat of arcane learning in Britannia, set on the southern tip of Verity Isle in the eastern reaches of the realm. Where Britain is the capital and the polymathic center, Moonglow is the specialist's city: nearly every form of sorcery, enchantment, and potion is studied here, and most of the realm's magical research is performed within its walls. Almost every great wizard interested in enhancing their personal abilities, or in increasing Britannia's pool of magical knowledge, has spent at least a few months at the Lycaeum — the legendary library and college that crowns the city's northern district.

Although the buildings were designed and constructed by mainland Britannia's architects and masons, the overall appearance of Moonglow favors function over form. Buildings are sturdy and devoid of superfluous accouterments. Streets are narrow but straightforward and well-connected. The whole settlement reads as one large campus, with the Lycaeum as its central college.

Identity

Attribute Value
Theme City of Honesty
Associated Virtue Honesty
Common Professions Mages, Scholars
Location 39°22'N 138°48'W
Government (Trammel) The Britannian Council
Government (Felucca) Factions / Vice vs Virtue

The city's character is defined by its devotion to objective intellectual pursuits — a deliberate counterpoint to the polymathic breadth of Britain. Where the capital is a city of generalists, Moonglow is a city of specialists. Practical comforts are imported and adopted quickly; native production is rare. The intellectual investment of the populace pays in arcane mastery, not in artisanship.

Government

In Trammel, Moonglow is governed by the Britannian Council; in Felucca, the Faction system contests control. The two facets are mirror copies with different rules of engagement.

The Lycaeum

The Lycaeum is the architectural and intellectual centerpiece of Moonglow — the stronghold of Truth in Britannian symbology. It contains the realm's most extensive arcane library, lecture halls for the visiting masters, and stable rooms for visiting researchers. The full collection of magical lore the realm has gathered is housed here, including primary-source histories that exist nowhere else.

The Telescope

The Moonglow Telescope is housed in the city's astronomical observatory east of the central district — famous in particular for its large orrery, a clockwork model of the heavenly bodies that sits at the observatory's center. The orrery's accuracy in tracking lunar phases makes it a working tool for arcane studies that depend on the moon, not merely a decorative landmark.

The Royal Zoo

The Moonglow Royal Zoo holds the realm's most extensive collection of exotic creatures — captive specimens of dragons, daemons, and rare beasts gathered from every corner of Britannia. The zoo serves both educational and research functions; the Moonglow Royal Zoo Collection quest item rewards bringing additional exotic captures to the curators, building out the zoo's roster.

The Blackrock Detector (historical)

For an extended era — until its destruction in March 2008 — Moonglow housed the Blackrock Detector, a magical device that could identify and track the spread of Blackrock magical contamination across Britannia. The detector was the diagnostic instrument of the Casca/Blackthorn era investigations and a major lore-event focus before its destruction. Its absence is now itself a noted feature of the city's history.

Shops and services

Moonglow's shop list emphasises arcane disciplines and scholarly support. The full slate is concentrated in the central district between the Lycaeum and the moongate.

Bakers and butchers

  • The Fatted Calf — butcher
  • Mage's Bread — bakery

  • The Mage's Seat — specialty woodworker, themed for arcane furniture

  • Moonglow Student Hostel — student housing for Lycaeum visiting researchers

The Moonglow Teleporter Park

A signature feature of the city: the Moonglow Teleporter Park is a fixed-destination teleporter network housed in a single open-air structure. Standing on each named teleporter pad transports the character to the corresponding destination across Britannia and beyond. The park was added to provide fast inter-city movement before the moongate dialog was expanded to cover all destinations; it remains in service today as one of the few persistent teleporter networks in the game.

Travel

The Moonglow Moongate is the canonical eastern moongate of the Britannian moongate network. Selecting "Moonglow" from the Britain Moongate dialog routes the traveler here. From within Moonglow, the moongate provides access to the rest of the lunar-phase moongate destinations.

A separate portal to Papua sits at 4540, 845 in surface coordinates — a fixed-destination teleporter into the Trammel/Felucca Lost Lands. The Moonglow Docks support ship landings for water-based travel from anywhere along the eastern coast.

Notes

  • Moonglow is on Verity Isle, the same island as the Honesty Shrine — the canonical shrine of the city's associated Virtue.
  • The orrery in the observatory is functional within the game's lunar-phase mechanic; consultation of the orrery confirms current lunar position for moongate destination cycling.
  • The Lycaeum's library is searchable in-game; the bookshelves carry the full canonical lore-text collection that informs the realm's history.

Strategy notes

  • Moonglow is the reagent capital. Mages stocking their suit on a fresh trip should anchor at the Moonglow Reagent Shop and Herbal Splendor — the per-stack pricing here is the lowest in the realm.
  • The Lycaeum's books are recallable lore sources. Moonglow runebook entries to the Lycaeum bookshelves provide direct access to the canonical lore text used by quest dialogs and event lines.
  • The Telescope orrery is not just decoration. The clockwork model accurately tracks current lunar phases — a glance at the orrery is the standard way to confirm whether a moongate's current destination matches what the dialog describes.
  • Masters of Illusion is the only Illusionists' Guild in the realm. Stealth-build characters who want quest content tied to illusion magic must visit Moonglow at least once.
  • The Honesty Shrine is one island over. From Moonglow, a brief Recall to the Honesty Shrine provides the Virtue meditation cycle for shrine-based ability gains.
