Hit Sparks

A folio of the realm

Hit Sparks

Hit Sparks is a weapon Item Property introduced in Publish 67 (the Mysticism expansion era) as part of the Stygian Abyss weapon-property suite. It is a chance-on-hit effect that strikes the target with a small electric-arc visual, dealing energy damage to the target and a secondary nearby creature, and returning mana to the attacker.

Hit Sparks reads on a weapon's properties as Hit Sparks NN% where NN is the proc chance per swing.

Mechanics

When the attacker lands a successful melee or ranged hit, there is an NN% chance the weapon procs Hit Sparks. The proc:

  • Deals a fixed amount of energy damage to the primary target, on top of the swing's normal damage.
  • Arcs to one additional creature within range and deals the same energy damage to it. The secondary target is automatically chosen — typically the next-closest hostile to the primary.
  • Returns mana to the attacker. The amount is small but meaningful in extended fights; it is the property's signature behaviour relative to the rest of the Hit-X suite (Hit Mana Drain, Hit Mana Leech).

The energy damage component bypasses physical Resistances and instead reads the target's energy resist, which is why the property is most efficient against creatures with low energy resist and meaningful armor/HP otherwise.

Sources

Hit Sparks can appear on a weapon via three channels:

Publish 123 PvP changes

Publish 123 substantially nerfed Hit Sparks for PvP combat without affecting its PvM behaviour:

  • A 30-second per-target immunity timer now applies in PvP. Once a player target is hit by Hit Sparks, they are immune to further Hit Sparks procs (from any attacker) for 30 seconds. This prevents two-weapon dual-wielders from chaining mana-return procs against a single target.
  • The mana return to the attacker has been reduced in PvP. The exact post-patch return value was not published but is meaningfully lower than the pre-Publish-123 amount.

PvM behaviour was unchanged — the immunity and reduced mana return apply only when both attacker and target are players.

Comparison to other Hit-X properties

Hit Sparks sits in the larger Hit-X family along with Hit Lightning, Hit Fireball, Hit Harm, Hit Magic Arrow, Hit Dispel, Hit Cold Area / Fire Area / Energy Area / Physical Area / Poison Area, plus the leech triad (Hit Mana Leech, Hit Life Leech, Hit Stamina Leech). Of these:

  • Hit Sparks is the only one that combines secondary-target arc and mana return in a single proc.
  • The leech triad returns a resource based on damage dealt; Hit Sparks returns a fixed-ish mana amount regardless of damage.
  • The area-effect Hit-X properties damage multiple nearby targets but do not return resources.

Against PvM mobs, Hit Sparks pairs especially well with builds running Mysticism or Magery — the mana return offsets the cost of an active spell rotation. In PvP after Publish 123, the property is still useful for the energy damage and the arc, but no longer carries the build-defining mana economy it once did.
