Bedlam
Bedlam
Bedlam is a Necromancy-themed dungeon in Malas, introduced with the Mondain's Legacy expansion (2005). Located beneath the city of Umbra, it is a disused academy of Necromancy that has been overrun by undead and necromantic constructs — most prominently, the Monstrous Interred Grizzle (its Peerless boss). The dungeon is invitation-only: players must complete the Mistaken Identity quest chain from Aernya the Mistress of Admissions before entering. Two levels host distinct content — the upper level features named-undead bosses tied to the Tuition Reimbursement quest and the Peerless prerequisite chain, while the lower level contains the Pestilence Champion Spawn with Ilhenir the Stained as its champion.
Location and entrance
- City of Umbra (Malas) — entrance at 21° 08' N, 52° 22' E.
- Iron Maiden in the healer's shop (north wall) — double-click to enter.
- Invitation Only: must start the Mistaken Identity quest chain from Aernya, Mistress of Admissions, found near the entrance. The chain culminates in Not Quite That Easy, which sends the player to Master Gnosos the Necromancer inside Bedlam.
First Level
The upper level. Mid-difficulty undead and the named bosses required for Peerless preparation.
Named Monsters
| Master Jonath | Master Theophilus | Master Mikael |
|---|---|---|
| Lady Jennifyr | Lady Marai | Sir Patrick |
| Red Death |
Red Death is the marquee named monster — required to be killed for the Tuition Reimbursement quest. On its corpse drops Resolve's Bridle, which is returned to Kia the Student in a separate quest. Red Death is a powerful magic user that runs very fast, but is not particularly tough; a single mage can wear it down, or a group of three players can drop it quickly.
Standard Spawn
Peerless — Monstrous Interred Grizzle
The Bedlam Peerless. Summoned by collecting 5 Disintegrating Thesis Notes (which look like dark blue spell scrolls) from the Named Undead — except Red Death — and exchanging them via Master Cohenn the Librarian's quest, Misplaced, for the Librarian's Key.
Key Mechanics
- Disintegrating Thesis Notes carry a far shorter timer than average Peerless keys. It is common for the 5th note to drop after the 1st has already decayed.
- The Librarian's Key is exchanged at the key table (in the house in the NW corner of Bedlam) for 3 smaller keys.
- Double-click a smaller key to teleport you and your nearby party to the Peerless room.
Combat — Monstrous Interred Grizzle
- Difficulty: Moderate.
- Signature ability: Infernal Ooze — does massive damage to equipment until durability hits single digits, then normal equipment damage. Deadly to weapons; gear ruination is the primary threat.
- Tactics:
- Mages: Earthquake spell + Summon Earth Elementals are the canonical approach.
- Dexers: Possible but very difficult; involves heavy jousting (don't run through ooze puddles — you will die).
- Tamers: Cu Sidhes work well. Use Greater Heal spell (rather than Veterinary skill) to avoid standing in ooze.
Drops
| Drop | Notes |
|---|---|
| Grizzled Mare | A Hellsteed that bonds instantly. The signature unique drop. |
| Grizzled Bones | Peerless ingredient. |
| Tombstone of the Damned | Named/Peerless decorative loot. |
| Monstrous Interred Grizzle Armor Set | Special bone armor set. |
Tips for Survival
- Red Death and other named monsters are immune to Ethereal Voyage.
- Area Peace and Orange Petals are very useful.
- A well-trained Cu Sidhe can kill any of the named monsters; the random spawn of undead makes the fight challenging.
- The Tamer trick of standing on the same tile as your pet is less effective here because undead spellcasters use Necromancy area spells.
- Red Death is solo-able by a tamer with a Cu Sidhe + Area Peace + frequent Gift of Renewal + Nature's Fury.
- If overwhelmed: run to the exit and re-enter; monsters often act as if they cannot see you for several seconds — usually enough to recover.
- Don't be fooled by the cemetery gate — named monsters can teleport past it, open it, or cast on you from inside.
Second Level — Pestilence Champion Spawn
Accessed via the graveyard west of the entrance, through a tomb with stairs down. See Champion Spawn for general mechanics.
Spawn Tiers
| Level | Spawn |
|---|---|
| Level 1 | Plague Beast Spawn, Bogling |
| Level 2 | Plague Beast, Bog Thing |
| Level 3 | Plague Beast Lord, Interred Grizzle (same that spawn in Palace of Paroxysmus) |
| Level 4 | Fetid Essence (same that spawn with the Prism of Light Peerless); "pestilent bandages" — looks similar to a mummy, takes more damage |
| Champion | Ilhenir the Stained |
Ilhenir the Stained
Physically, Ilhenir is kind of a Paragon Interred Grizzle — looks similar, has the equipment-destruction ooze attack, and hits fairly hard.
