Tuition Reimbursement
Tuition Reimbursement
Tuition Reimbursement is the entry quest chain for Bedlam, the Mondain's Legacy Peerless dungeon located in the Heartwood-area mountains. The quest — together with its companion entry quest Mistaken Identity — is the only path for new characters to gain access to Bedlam's Master Cohenn Peerless boss encounter and its Ilhenir the Stained sub-boss content. The quest's name and flavor are deliberately academic-bureaucratic — players are tasked by an in-character researcher to collect tuition-reimbursement forms from a series of locations, mirroring the real-world bureaucratic absurdity of expense paperwork. Despite the comic framing, the quest is mechanically serious: completion is required for Bedlam access, and the rewards include Mondain's Legacy event-era artifacts.
Quest overview
| Attribute | Value |
|---|---|
| Quest type | Bedlam entry-gating quest chain |
| Quest-giver | A researcher NPC located in Heartwood (the elven city in Ilshenar) |
| Sister quest | Mistaken Identity (the alternate Bedlam entry path) |
| Era | Mondain's Legacy (2005) |
| Required for | First-time Bedlam access — Master Cohenn encounter |
| Repeatable | The entry-grant is permanent per character; the quest itself is non-repeatable |
The quest is canonical for any character planning to engage Bedlam content; without completing it (or its sister quest), Bedlam's interior is inaccessible.
The quest chain
The Tuition Reimbursement quest unfolds as a multi-step research-and-fetch chain:
| Step | Action |
|---|---|
| 1. Accept the quest | Speak with the Heartwood researcher; receive the Tuition Reimbursement Form |
| 2. Visit the registrar | The first form must be authenticated by a Registrar NPC located in a specific Mondain's Legacy zone |
| 3. Collect signatures | The form requires multiple signatures from named NPCs across Ilshenar, Trammel, and possibly Tokuno Islands |
| 4. Pay the fees | A nominal fee in gold is required to process the form (usually 1,000–5,000 gp depending on the year) |
| 5. Submit the form | Deliver the signed, fee-paid form to the original Heartwood researcher |
| 6. Receive Bedlam pass | The researcher confirms eligibility and grants the Bedlam access pass — a quest item that allows entry to the Bedlam dungeon |
| 7. Receive reward | A completion reward is granted (an artifact, gold, or skill bonus) |
Quest items
| Item | Role |
|---|---|
| Tuition Reimbursement Form | The signed/authenticated paperwork — a quest item |
| Signed Tuition Reimbursement | A variant of the same form, post-signature |
| Tuition Reimbursement (Item) | An item-tagged version that some players have looked up in older guides |
| Tuition Reimbursement (Quest) | The quest entry as referenced by Tuition_Reimbursement_(Quest) slug |
Reward
| Reward type | Detail |
|---|---|
| Bedlam access | Permanent character-level access to the Bedlam dungeon and its Master Cohenn encounter |
| Completion artifact | Mondain's Legacy era random artifact — varies by patch |
| Skill points | Small skill bonus (typically +0.1–0.5 in a relevant secondary skill) |
| Gold reward | Nominal — 1,000–10,000 gp depending on year |
The Bedlam access is the canonical reward — the artifact and gold are bonuses.
Why the bureaucratic framing?
The Mondain's Legacy team chose academic-bureaucratic flavor for the entry quest deliberately. Bedlam itself is a library/asylum dungeon in lore — the original purpose of the building was as Master Cohenn's research library, and the dungeon's pre-corruption status was as a scholar's retreat. Tuition Reimbursement and Mistaken Identity are both academic flavor: a tuition-form quest and an identity-mistake quest, both of which evoke the bureaucratic chaos of Master Cohenn's failing administration.
The flavor contrasts with Bedlam's actual content — once inside, players face infernal-ooze monsters, Master Cohenn's 5-Disintegrating-Thesis-Notes Peerless boss, Monstrous Interred Grizzle, and Ilhenir the Stained. The quest's bureaucratic comedy is a deliberate prologue to the dungeon's grim reality.
The sister quest — Mistaken Identity
Mistaken Identity is the alternate Bedlam entry quest — same goal (granting Bedlam access), different flavor:
| Quest | Flavor |
|---|---|
| Tuition Reimbursement | Bureaucratic paperwork — collect signatures, pay fees, submit form |
| Mistaken Identity | A case of mistaken identity — find the right NPC, prove who you are, clear up the misunderstanding |
Players who complete either gain Bedlam access. There is no benefit to completing both; players typically pick the one with the more convenient NPC location.
Master Cohenn — what awaits
Once Bedlam access is granted, players can challenge Master Cohenn, the dungeon's Peerless boss:
| Mechanic | Detail |
|---|---|
| Summoning | Use 5 Disintegrating Thesis Notes to summon Master Cohenn (the Peerless mechanic) |
| Combat type | High-tier Mage + Necromancer hybrid; AoE Disintegrate-style abilities |
| Drops | High-tier ML artifacts, the Slither (a rare snake-themed talisman), and named-drop artifacts |
| Sub-bosses | Monstrous Interred Grizzle and Ilhenir the Stained — accessible after Cohenn defeat |
See the Bedlam article for the full encounter mechanics.
Strategy notes
| Tip | Why |
|---|---|
| Do the quest early | Bedlam access is permanent; complete the quest while ML content is fresh |
| Bring 5,000+ gp | Forms have processing fees; don't be caught short |
| Mount a horse | The signature-collection legs require travel between Ilshenar, Trammel, and possibly Tokuno locations |
| Coordinate with Mistaken Identity | If a partner needs Bedlam access too, you can do them in parallel — split the NPC visits |
