Tribal Mask
Tribal Mask
The Tribal Mask is a Tokuno-themed head-slot wearable item that comes in two distinct sub-types — a Small Tribal Mask and a Large Tribal Mask — both crafted from the Tribal-tier reward sets introduced as part of the Tokuno Islands expansion. The masks are the canonical "Tokuno cosmetic head item" — they grant modest combat bonuses, occupy the head slot in place of a hat or helm, and are most often paired with the rest of a Tokuno-themed cosmetic loadout (Bushido-flavored armor, Yumi or Wakizashi side weapons, Tokuno-rare paintings on the wall).
The two masks differ in stat profile and acquisition method — the Small Tribal Mask is a more common drop with lighter bonuses; the Large Tribal Mask is a rarer drop with stronger ones. Both are race-agnostic — Humans, Elves, and Gargoyles can equip either, with Gargoyle-specific item-art for the Gargish version.
The two Tribal Mask variants
| Variant | Stat profile | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Small Tribal Mask | Light combat bonus + standard head-slot resists | Treasures of Tokuno drop, vendor purchase |
| Large Tribal Mask | Heavier combat bonus + +Mage-friendly resists | Treasures of Tokuno rare-drop, quest reward |
Both occupy the head slot in the equipment menu — players choose either-or, not both. Once equipped, the mask is held in the head-slot until manually removed; it does not interact with shield or weapon slots.
How Tribal Masks fit into Tokuno cosmetic builds
The Tribal Mask is the headpiece anchor of a Tokuno-themed cosmetic loadout. The full anchor:
| Slot | Tokuno-themed item |
|---|---|
| Head | Tribal Mask (Small or Large) |
| Chest / Arms | Studded Leather (Tokuno-flavored), or Bushi-themed armor |
| Legs | Hakama or studded leg armor |
| Hands | Studded gloves |
| Feet | Geta sandals or thigh boots |
| Weapon | Yumi (longbow) or Wakizashi (short sword) |
| Accessory | Heritage Token, Tokuno-set ring/bracelet |
The whole loadout is the canonical "Bushi" or "Ninja" cosmetic player look — a Sampire or Throwing Gargoyle in this gear is functionally equivalent to the same character in mainland armor but visually unmistakably Tokuno.
Acquisition — Treasures of Tokuno
The Treasures of Tokuno event is the canonical mass-distribution mechanic for Tokuno cosmetic items including Tribal Masks. The cycle:
| Step | What happens |
|---|---|
| Treasures of Tokuno seasonal event runs | Tokuno mobs drop "Tokuno Coins" with each kill |
| Player exchanges Coins | At the Tokuno mainland event NPCs |
| Coins → Tokuno-themed item | Tribal Masks (Small/Large) are among the prize roster |
The Small Tribal Mask is an early-tier reward — accessible after a moderate Coin grind. The Large Tribal Mask is a mid-to-high-tier reward requiring substantially more Coins. Some players run the Treasures of Tokuno event entirely for the Tribal Mask grind, especially when collecting both Small and Large for cosmetic display.
Tribal Mask combat bonuses
The mechanical bonuses on Tribal Masks are modest by end-game standards:
| Bonus | Small | Large |
|---|---|---|
| Resists (Phys/Fire/Cold/Pois/Energy) | 5% / 5% / 5% / 5% / 5% | 8% / 8% / 8% / 8% / 8% |
| Combat bonus | Small Hit Chance Increase or Damage Increase | Stronger HCI / DI roll, or +Magery for Mage-flavored builds |
| Special property | None | None or rare bonus property roll |
The masks are not end-game stat-grinder pieces — a fully-imbued helm can roll significantly higher properties than either Tribal Mask. They are cosmetic + modest stat pieces that fit a Tokuno-themed build comfortably.
Tribal Mask in modern UO
In modern UO, the Tribal Masks are collector items more than build-defining gear. The dominant use cases:
| Use case | Why Tribal Masks |
|---|---|
| RP / cosmetic shard | Tokuno-themed roleplay loadouts |
| House display | Both Small and Large displayed alongside Tokuno cosmetics |
| Tokuno achievement | Completing the Treasures of Tokuno cycle to acquire both |
| Mid-tier replacement gear | Filling the head slot on a low-budget alt before serious imbuing investment |
The cosmetic role dominates. End-game characters with full Imbuing budgets generally craft a fully-imbued helm (matching their build's stat priorities) and keep the Tribal Mask in the bank for cosmetic occasions.
Tribal Mask vs. other Tokuno head items
| Item | Slot | Tokuno-themed? |
|---|---|---|
| Tribal Mask (Small) | Head | Yes |
| Tribal Mask (Large) | Head | Yes |
| Bushi War Helm | Head | Yes |
| Pirate Hat | Head | No (but pirate-themed) |
| Headdress of the Ancients | Head | Yes (Heritage tier) |
The Tribal Mask occupies a specific Tokuno-cosmetic slot in the head-piece roster. A Tokuno-themed player chooses the Tribal Mask if they want a "tribal" aesthetic; the Bushi War Helm is the more militaristic alternative. Both are Tokuno-flavored and gear-compatible with the rest of a Tokuno loadout.
