A folio of the realm

Agent of the Crown

The Agent of the Crown is the NPC artifact-exchange officer stationed at Castle Blackthorn, introduced with Publish 85 (March 2014) as part of the Castle Blackthorn invasion content. The Agent's role is mechanical: exchange Minax-aligned artifacts for Blackthorn-aligned artifacts, allowing players who already farmed Minax-themed items during the Time of Legends event cycle to convert those items to the new Blackthorn artifact pool without re-farming. The Agent is the canonical bridge between the two artifact systems and the only NPC in the game to perform a one-for-one artifact-to-artifact exchange.

Location

The Agent is located inside Castle Blackthorn, in the dungeon's central courtyard near the Catacombs entrance. The Castle is reachable through:

Route Notes
Public MoongateCastle Blackthorn Pub 85 added the Castle as a public moongate destination
Recall to Castle Blackthorn rune Custom rune; widely shared post-Pub-85
Sail to Britannia Royal docks → Castle Blackthorn Long route, used during invasion event lore

Both Trammel and Felucca Castle facets host an Agent — the exchange function is identical on both. The Castle Blackthorn Dungeon article documents the broader content.

Exchange mechanic

The Agent accepts Minax artifacts (dropped during the Time of Legends Shadowguard 4-tower event and other Time-of-Legends content) and gives back a Blackthorn artifact of equivalent or matching tier. The exchange is one-for-one — one Minax artifact in, one Blackthorn artifact out — and is irreversible.

Input (Minax artifact) Output (Blackthorn artifact, same tier)
Tier 1 Minax (low-tier event drops) Tier 1 Blackthorn (Castle Blackthorn random drops)
Tier 2 Minax (mid-tier — most common Shadowguard drops) Tier 2 Blackthorn
Tier 3 Minax (rare Shadowguard 4-tower completions) Tier 3 Blackthorn (rare Catacombs drops)

The specific output is randomized within the matching tier — players cannot select a specific output artifact. The full output pool covers the Catacombs random drop table plus the Castle Blackthorn invasion drop pool from Publish 85.

Why the exchange exists

The exchange exists for two narrative-and-design reasons:

  1. Player retention: When Publish 85 shipped, players who had already invested significant time farming Time of Legends content (notably the Shadowguard 4-tower mechanic and Travesty's Court drops) were entering the new content at a deficit — Castle Blackthorn drops were Pub-85-fresh. The Agent of the Crown lets long-term players port their existing artifact stockpile to the new content, preserving farming investment.

  2. Lore consistency: The Castle Blackthorn invasion was an anti-Minax campaign. Per the Pub-85 storyline, the Blackthorn faction (under the new King Lord Blackthorn) was actively dismantling Minax's hold on Britannia. Trading Minax artifacts to a Blackthorn-aligned officer in exchange for Blackthorn artifacts is canonically aligned with the lore — the Crown is reclaiming Minax-corrupted gear.

Dungeon-points conversion

The Agent also accepts dungeon-points (the Castle Blackthorn invasion currency) at a fixed rate as a gold-proxy currency:

Dungeon-point bundle Equivalent gold value
Per point ~5,000 gp (rough proxy at launch)
Per Tier-1 Blackthorn artifact ~50,000 gp (10 points)
Per Tier-3 rare ~500,000 gp+ (100+ points)

The dungeon-points → artifact path is the alternative to the Minax-trade path; players without Minax artifacts can simply farm Castle Blackthorn invasion content and turn in points at the Agent.

Roleplay restrictions

Castle Blackthorn enforces recall-forbidden zones in several rooms — the Agent's chamber permits recall in/out but not within. The roleplay-flavor restriction reflects the invasion-quarantine lore: the Castle is in a sealed state until the player completes their dealings.

Related Crown officers

The Agent of the Crown is part of a wider network of Crown officers introduced in Publishes 85–88:

The pattern is consistent: each post-Pub-79 expansion introduces NPC turn-in officers for its specific content stream.
