Black Order
Black Order
The Black Order is a Tokuno assassin and ninja-magic guild — a secretive paramilitary order whose members serve as the official keepers of The Citadel, the dungeon-fortress on Isamu-Jima where Travesty dwells. The Order's members manifest in-game as a four-class roster — Mage, Grand Mage, Thief, and Assassin — that occupies the Citadel's defensive corridors and provides the bulk of its hostile-spawn pressure. The Order is canonically introduced with Mondain's Legacy (2005) as the shadow analogue of the Tokuno samurai-and-court establishment: where the Empire and the noble houses operate in the open with public titles, the Black Order operates in shadow, training assassins and shugenja-mages outside the Imperial chain of command.
Roster
The Black Order's combat-presence in The Citadel is divided into four defined classes:
| Class | UOG slug | Role | Notable abilities |
|---|---|---|---|
| Black Order Mage | Black_Order_Mage |
Standard combat caster | Magery + Necromancy combinations; medium HP |
| Black Order Grand Mage | Black_Order_Grand_Mage |
Senior caster — Order officer rank | High Magery + Mysticism (post-SA) + Spell-mastery — late-game encounter |
| Black Order Thief | Black_Order_Thief |
Pickpocket / item-stealer | Snooping + Stealing; vanishes after stealing |
| Black Order Assassin | Black_Order_Assassin |
Stealth-melee killer | Hidden until in melee range; high-damage Bushido swings + Poison |
The four classes appear in graduated waves through The Citadel: Mages and Thieves on early levels, Grand Mages and Assassins guarding the inner corridors and the Travesty summon-room.
The Citadel — the Order's seat
The Citadel is the Order's fortified headquarters and training facility. Located on Isamu-Jima at the eastern edge of the Tokuno archipelago, the dungeon serves three functions:
- Defensive headquarters — protecting the Order's senior leadership and the Travesty.
- Training facility — where new initiates progress from Thief/Mage rank to Grand Mage/Assassin rank.
- Travesty's prison — keeping Travesty bound to the Order's service via ritual chains.
Players entering the Citadel face the Order in layered defense: outer corridors are Black Order Mages and Thieves; deeper corridors host Grand Mages; the Travesty summon-room is guarded by Black Order Assassins at the choke-point.
Travesty's relationship with the Order
The Order's most potent asset is Travesty — the shape-mimicking spirit that copies a player's appearance and skills. Travesty is bound to the Order through Tokuno-arcane chains, and the 3-key summoning ritual (Yellow / Blue / Red keys, dropped by the Order's senior leadership) is what allows players to summon and challenge Travesty in their assassin-warding chamber.
Travesty's signature Mortal-Strike-via-Breath-of-Dead attack and the ninja-summon-via-HP-threshold mechanic (the boss spawns lower-tier summons as it loses health) are taught to Travesty by the Black Order — a key piece of in-game lore tying the boss to the Order's training methods.
Members and lieutenants
| Named member | Role |
|---|---|
| Sarakki the Notary (Sarakki) | The Citadel's record-keeper; an Order administrator and a quest-giver |
| The Travesty (Travesty) | Bound shape-mimic; the Order's most prized asset |
| Yellow Key Holder | Senior officer, drops the Yellow summoning key |
| Blue Key Holder | Senior officer, drops the Blue summoning key |
| Red Key Holder | Senior officer, drops the Red summoning key |
The full Order leadership roster is larger than the in-game spawn list — the BNN material implies a hierarchical structure with several rank-tiers above the Grand Mage, but only the four player-encountered classes are mechanically represented.
Lore — origins
The Black Order is canonically older than the modern Empire. Pre-2005 BNN material situates the Order in a pre-Imperial Tokuno era, when noble houses maintained private intelligence and assassination retinues. When the Empire centralized power, the Order was officially disbanded but persisted underground as a shadow guild, taking contracts from any noble willing to pay.
The Order's modern role — keepers of The Citadel and Travesty — was established by an arcane bargain between the Order's Grand Master and a Tokuno Imperial agent: in exchange for a permanent home (The Citadel) and access to the Travesty research, the Order agreed to defend the dungeon and provide assassination-services to the Crown when called.
Affiliated items and rewards
| Item | Source |
|---|---|
| Mark of Travesty | Pair-skill mask, +10/+10 bonus to two skills — drops from Travesty herself |
| Yellow / Blue / Red Keys | Drop from the three senior Order members |
| Black Order armor (cosmetic) | Rare drop from senior Order members |
| Order signet (lore item) | Quest-only |
The Mark of Travesty is the canonical Citadel reward and one of UO's most coveted hat-slot items.
Combat tips
| Tip | Why |
|---|---|
| Assassin Slayer / Repond Slayer | Both work — Repond covers all four classes (humanoids); Assassin Slayer is the matched-class option |
| Curare-poisoned weapons | Black Order Mages have moderate Resisting Spells but low poison resist — Curare is highly effective |
| Tracking | The four classes are all humanoid type; Tracking will detect them at range |
| Stealth-vs-Stealth | Black Order Assassins are themselves Stealth users; Detect Hidden + Tracking combination breaks them out |
| Fields of Magery / Mysticism | The Grand Mages are especially vulnerable to Energy Field chokepoints and Earthquake AoE |
