Cape of Heroes
Cape of Heroes
The Cape of Heroes is a small landmass and shrine site on the southern coast of the Britannian mainland, lying east of the western sea and roughly south-east of Serpent's Hold. It is one of Trammel and Felucca's most modest geographic features — a stub of land jutting into the ocean — but it carries outsized significance as the landing point of the original Avatar in several Ultima novels and the canonical location of the Shrine of Honor for the Britannian mainland. The Cape is referenced repeatedly in pre-AoS Origin lore as the place "where the Avatar first set foot on Sosaria," and the surrounding waters are a low-density spawn zone suitable for new players testing fishing, sailing, or shoreline combat.
Geography
| Attribute | Value |
|---|---|
| Facets | Trammel and Felucca (identical layout) |
| Coordinates | ~146° 13'S, 50° 28'E (sextant-readable) |
| Closest city | Serpent's Hold — to the east-north-east across a narrow strait |
| Closest dungeon | None — pure shoreline geography |
| Adjacent shrines | Shrine of Honor sits on the Cape itself |
| Recall/Mark | Permitted on both facets |
The Cape itself is a roughly triangular peninsula jutting south into the sea, with a single sandy beach on the eastern flank and forested cliffs to the west. There is no town or NPC presence — the Shrine of Honor stands alone in a small clearing.
Shrine of Honor
The Shrine of Honor is one of the eight virtue shrines of Britannia, dedicated to the Honor virtue. The Cape of Heroes is its canonical mainland home (a separate Honor shrine exists in Ilshenar).
| Attribute | Value |
|---|---|
| Virtue | Honor |
| Mantra | Summ |
| Linked principle | Truth + Courage |
| Linked dungeon (anti-virtue) | None on this shrine — Honor is "the lordship over self" with no anti-Hythloth equivalent. The closest opposing dungeon by lore is Khaldun. |
| Function | Mantra-chant restores the Honor virtue level to its Sacrifice cap (when below); also enables the Bushido Perfection mechanic for skill checks. |
Lore — the Avatar's first step
In the Origin canon and in Ultima IV: Quest of the Avatar, the Stranger (later Avatar) is recalled to Britannia and steps ashore at the Cape of Heroes. The Cape is described in the Britannian Atlas as the "southern gateway to the realm" — the symbolic entry point for any hero arriving by sea. Multiple in-game NPCs at Serpent's Hold reference the Cape's role as a hero-landing site, and the canonical Avatar article documents the multi-Ultima continuity of the landing.
Sailing and combat use
The Cape is a low-difficulty zone for new players:
- Shore spawns are limited to Skeletons, Zombies, and the occasional Wandering Healer in Trammel; Headless and Lizardmen in Felucca.
- Off-shore waters carry Sea Serpents and Deep Sea Serpents — useful low-tier Fishing prey for early players.
- No dungeon entrances open here; the Cape is purely a shoreline waypoint.
Players running the Honor virtue cycle typically Recall to the Cape, chant Summ at the shrine, then continue on to Trinsic (the Honor city) for the Britannian Royal Guard heritage tour.
Relation to Serpent's Hold
The strait between Cape of Heroes and Serpent's Hold is one of the shortest open-sea crossings in mainland Britannia, making the two locations a natural pair on the Honor virtue tour. Serpent's Hold houses the Order of the Silver Serpent → Britannian Royal Guard lineage; the Cape provides the shrine and the symbolic landing.
