Painted Caves
Painted Caves
The Painted Caves is a small Mondain's Legacy dungeon located in the mountain range west of Trinsic on both Trammel and Felucca facets. The same range hosts the Hidden Valley elven enclave, and the Painted Caves takes its name from the primitive cave-paintings that decorate its walls — the work of the Troglodyte caveman race that inhabits it. The Caves are notable for their distinctive Troglodyte-Grobu-Lurg mini-boss chain, the Grobu's Fur drop (a quest reagent), and the Primitive Fetish drops used in the Hidden Valley quest chain. Unlike most ML-era content, the Painted Caves have no quest or admission price to enter — they are open to any adventurer.
Location and entrance
- Felucca / Trammel: 120-29 South 27-29 East, in the small mountain range west of Trinsic.
- No quest or admission price to enter the cave.
- Open access to all adventurers regardless of skill or virtue.
The Troglodytes
Troglodytes are the primary inhabitants of the Caves — giant cavemen with the unusual ability to heal themselves with bandages (matching player Healing skill mechanics). They use crude weapons, primarily clubs.
Companion creatures: - Pet dogs and pet cats — companions to the Troglodytes; weak fighters but harassment-tier. - Rats and Giant Rats — the cave is mildly infested.
The Troglodytes drop Primitive Fetishes, used in a Hidden Valley quest chain.
The mini-bosses — Lurg and Grobu
Lurg and Grobu dwell in the back part of the cave. Together they are the dungeon's signature mini-boss encounter:
| Boss | Notes |
|---|---|
| Lurg | Troglodyte chieftain. No magic, no special tricks — except he heals himself with bandages like all Troglodytes. Solo-able with patience. |
| Grobu | Lurg's pet. No magic, no tricks. Aggressive — but killing Grobu lowers your Karma. Drops Grobu's Fur on his corpse. |
A common tactic: lure Grobu away from Lurg toward the cave entrance, then run back to Lurg before Grobu can chase you. This isolates Lurg as a single-target fight without his pet's harassment.
Both Lurg and Grobu are solo-able, but it's a rough ride — bring potions, healing skills, and patience.
Karma warning
Killing Grobu costs Karma. For paladin-style or virtue-conscious characters, the recommended approach is:
- Lure Grobu away from Lurg.
- Don't kill Grobu — just outrun him to leave the cave.
- Engage Lurg solo while Grobu wanders back.
- Loot Lurg, exit the cave, return only if needed.
For non-virtuous characters, killing Grobu for Grobu's Fur is straightforward — just tank the small Karma loss and reset later via Compassion-virtue rezzes or Justice protector kills.
Drops and rewards
| Drop | Source | Use |
|---|---|---|
| Primitive Fetishes | Normal Troglodytes | Used in a Hidden Valley quest chain. |
| Grobu's Fur | Grobu's corpse | Quest reagent. |
| ML Artifacts | Lurg, Grobu | As do all named beasts in the Mondain's Legacy dungeons, Lurg and Grobu both give out Mondain's Legacy artifacts randomly to participants who've contributed sufficient damage. |
Hidden references
A sharp-eyed adventurer will uncover a hidden word painted in the Caves — part of the dungeon's lore-puzzle layer, related to the broader Hidden Valley quest tree.
Tactical notes
- Cu Sidhe tamer + Greater Heal pet is the canonical solo-Lurg approach.
- Mage with Earth Vortex summon also works; the Vortex tanks the Troglodytes while you nuke.
- Archer with Repond Slayer ends fights quickly (Troglodytes count as Repond — humanoid).
- The cave is tight; AoE spells (Earthquake, Meteor Swarm) hit multiple Troglodytes at once.
