Papua
Papua
Papua is one of the two settlements in the Lost Lands (the other being Delucia), located in the eastern reaches of the Lost Lands and surrounded by a vast swamp teeming with giant frogs, alligators, and other marshland denizens. Papua serves as a popular jumping-off point for adventurers exploring the eastern Lost Lands, with a distinctive rattan-and-thatch architecture that sets it visually apart from any Britannian city. Notable for the shipwright with a ship perpetually under construction, the stable with horse dung, and the mage shop with a teleporter to Moonglow, Papua is the gateway to Sak Teb, the Fire Dungeon lava pits, and the southern Ophidian/Terathan war zones.
Architecture
Papua's architecture is rattan, woven walls with thatched roofing — a deliberate aesthetic shift from Britannia's stone-and-timber construction. The visual signature is closer to a tropical Polynesian village than to a traditional Western settlement; combined with the swamp environment, Papua feels like a frontier outpost on a different continent.
Notable landmarks and features
| Landmark | Notes |
|---|---|
| The shipwright | Features a ship seemingly perpetually under construction. A long-running visual joke / detail in UO history. |
| The stable | Notable for its horse dung — a small-detail texture that became iconic. |
| The mage shop with Moonglow teleporter | Stand on the teleporter and say recsu to travel to Moonglow. To return from Moonglow, stand on the opposite teleporter there and say recdu. The recsu/recdu word-pairs are a classic Lost Lands-Britannia connection. |
| The Lighthouse (location) | Far to the north of Papua. A navigational aid; in some BNN-era events, the Lighthouse has hosted quest NPCs. |
The Moonglow teleporter — recsu / recdu
A unique feature: the Papua mage shop hosts a teleporter to Moonglow that operates by spoken-word command:
| Direction | Spoken word |
|---|---|
| Papua → Moonglow | Say recsu while standing on the teleporter. |
| Moonglow → Papua | Stand on the opposite teleporter (in Moonglow) and say recdu. |
This is one of UO's rare verbal-command teleport mechanics — most modern travel uses moongates, runebooks, or direct teleporter pads. The recsu/recdu words feel mystical-old and are rarely advertised, which makes them a somewhat-secret travel route for those in the know.
Surrounding wildlife — the swamp
The vast swamp around Papua hosts:
- Giant Frogs — swamp-tier hostiles
- Alligators — moderate threat
- Marshland denizens — assorted swamp creatures
- Greater Hinds and other game animals on the drier ground
- Ophidian and Terathan warring factions in the southern Lost Lands extend into Papua's outskirts at low frequencies
Strategic and lore notes
- First settlement-stop for Lost Lands travelers approaching from the east via boat or via the Britannia cave-tunnel network.
- The ship under construction at the docks is a long-running visual punchline; UO has had this detail since the 1998 launch of the Lost Lands.
- No Virtue association — Papua is a frontier town, not a Virtue city.
- The recsu/recdu Moonglow link is one of the few Lost Lands ↔ Britannia teleport routes that doesn't require a recall scroll, making Papua a useful outpost for Lost Lands explorers without rune access.
