A folio of the realm

Shugenja's Wand

The Shugenja's Wand is a −0 Mage Weapon artifact wand — one of the rarest and most coveted items in the Mage Weapon catalogue. It carries the iconic Mace Fighting (wand) weapon class with a Mage Weapon −0 property, meaning a caster wielding it converts all 100 of their Magery to 100 Mace Fighting for swing-and-special-attack purposes with zero penalty — the holy-grail combination for hybrid mage-melee builds. The wand was introduced as a Tokuno Islands themed artifact during the Samurai Empire-era event cycle and remains one of only five known −0 Mage Weapon items in the game.

Properties

Property Value
Type One-handed wand (Mace Fighting class)
Mage Weapon penalty −0 (the unique-among-non-uniques value)
Spell Channeling Yes — cast freely while held
Damage ~12–16 base (low — wand class)
Speed 3.25s base
Hit effect None (the slot is reserved for magic-channel)
Required skill Mace Fighting at any level (full Magery → full Mace Fighting conversion)

Why "−0" matters

The Mage Weapon property normally subtracts a penalty from the converted weapon-skill value:

This means a Shugenja's Wand carrier does not need to invest a single point in Mace Fighting — they get GM Mace Fighting on every swing, leveraged off their pre-existing Magery investment. This is the canonical hybrid mage-melee enabler.

Other −0 Mage Weapons

The complete list of −0 Mage Weapon artifacts:

Item Class Source
Staff of the Magi Magic-staff Pre-AoS / classic artifact
Staff of Pyros Magic-staff AoS-era artifact
Swords of Prosperity Magic-Sword AoS — Doom or Champion Spawn
Shugenja's Wand (this article) Mace Wand Samurai Empire / Tokuno event
Kotl_Black_Rod Magic-staff Eodon — Treasures of Eodon

The Shugenja's Wand is the only −0 wand (Mace Fighting class) — the others are all staff/sword variants.

Acquisition

The Shugenja's Wand is a rare drop from a small set of Tokuno-themed event encounters:

Source Drop chance
Treasures of Tokuno events Random tier-2 reward (early ToT cycles)
Tokuno Islands special encounters Rare random drop
Samurai Empire era loot Pre-2008 rare drop
Player vendor The active aftermarket — usually 5m–20m gp

It is not produced by Tailoring, Smithing, or Inscription. It is not Imbuing-recoverable: imbuers cannot replicate the Mage Weapon property at the −0 level. The drop is the only way.

Lore — the Shugenja class

The wand is named for the Shugenja, a Tokuno-mystic archetype — a class of holy practitioners in Asian folklore (yamabushi). UO never released a Shugenja player class, but the artifact's name and cosmetic (a curved wand with paper-talisman wrappings) reference the Tokuno expansion's mystic flavor: a mage who treats their staff as a sacred relic rather than a weapon. The wand fits thematically with Bushido + Magery dual builds and pairs visually with Tokuno Islands clothing.

Build implications

Build How Shugenja's Wand fits
Pure Mage (no melee) Carry it for emergency melee: the Mage Weapon conversion + the mana cost of casting offsets enemy interrupts in melee range
Mage-Sampire Pair with Vampiric_Embrace and Bushido → swing for full Mace Fighting damage when out of mana
Bushido-Mage The classic Tokuno hybrid — Magery casts spells, then Bushido + Mace Fighting Onslaught/Confidence specials with no skill investment
Necro-Mace-Mage Necromancy + Magery + Eval Int + Necro → Vampiric form gives lifesteal; the wand provides melee fallback

Identifying genuine vs. fake drops

Player vendors occasionally list "Shugenja's Wand" items at unusually low prices — be wary:

  • Genuine wands carry the −0 Mage Weapon property and the Spell Channeling property
  • Fake wands (modded by previous owners or mismarked listings) often carry −10 or −20 Mage Weapon — significantly weaker
  • Use Item Identification at GM to confirm before purchase
  • The wand has a unique sprite (curved wand with paper-charm wrappings) — visual ID is reliable
