Deceit
Deceit
Deceit is the Anti-Virtue dungeon opposing Honesty — a four-level undead complex carved into the Frozen Mountains on Dagger Isle in the far northeast. It first appeared in Ultima IV: Quest of the Avatar and remains one of the oldest UO dungeons. The dungeon's signature features are the brazier-spawn mechanic in the entry chamber and the Unholy Terror Champion Spawn (with Neira the Necromancer as the boss champion) on the Felucca facet.

The dungeon's narrative framing: in the distant past it was the site of "a series of terrible experiments," which is the in-character explanation for the massive undead infestation that overran the complex.
Geography
Deceit sits in the Frozen Mountains on Dagger Isle — a small offshore island in the northeast. The dungeon is reached by:
- Boat to Dagger Isle, then walk to the entrance.
- Recall to a marked rune at the entrance.
- Moongate travel is not a direct option — Deceit has no adjacent moongate; the Vesper Moongate is the closest mainland teleporter.
The cold, isolated geography reinforces the dungeon's theme — Deceit is intentionally remote, fitting the Honesty anti-virtue's lore as a hidden and hidden-from-light place.
The Brazier
Near the entrance, in the left room of the first level on the west wall, sits a brazier that spawns a random Britannian monster when double-clicked. The brazier mechanic:
- 15-minute cooldown between uses.
- Random outcome: anything from a Sewer Rat or Mongbat to a Dragon.
- The brazier does not spawn creatures from Lost Lands, Ilshenar, or Malas — only Britannia-native creatures.
- The spawn fights normally; killing it loots normal monster drops.
The brazier is one of UO's earliest "wild card" mechanics — most often the result is a low-tier annoyance, occasionally a free Dragon farm. Players rarely commit to brazier farming as primary content; it's a curiosity and a quest gimmick.
Level 1 — the experimental antechamber
The first level looks like the site of "a series of terrible experiments." The brazier room is here. Inhabitants:
- Ghouls
- Mummies
- Shades
- Skeletons
- Spectres
- Wraiths
- Zombies
Mid-tier undead, suitable for new necromancers training and warriors leveling weapon skills. Drop tables include standard undead loot (small gold, occasional magic items, Cursed Items table).
Level 2 — the door corridor
The second level is "completely overrun by various undead creatures" — but the navigation challenge is the many doors blocking your way. Lockpicking or Magery's Unlock spell breaks the doors; simple corridor pathing.
Inhabitants:
- Bone Knights
- Bone Magi
- Ghouls
- Mummies
- Shades
- Skeletal Knights
- Skeletal Mages
- Skeletons
- Spectres
- Wraiths
- Zombies
Step up in difficulty: Bone Knights and Skeletal Mages introduce real combat threats compared to Level 1's basic skeletons.
Level 3 — the swampy halls
The hallways are filled with swampy ground from water seeping through ancient walls. Some rooms hold pools of sickly green water so toxic that going near it will poison you — environmental damage.
Inhabitants:
- Ghouls
- Liches
- Shades
- Spectres
- Wraiths
The Liches mark the level's difficulty step — high-tier necromancer casters that will pulldown an unprepared dexer. Cure potions are mandatory.
Level 4 — the crypts
The fourth level houses the crypts where "the most feared denizens of the dungeon dwell." So far underground that a river of lava flows through it at one spot. Environmental fire damage near the lava.
Inhabitants:
Lich Lords are the canonical Level 4 challenge — high HP, multiple Necromancy spells, group-spawn. Pre-Champion-Spawn, Lich Lords were the gold-and-magic-loot endpoint of Deceit; modern players still farm them for the Cursed Item drop tables.
Unholy Terror Champion Spawn (Felucca)
In Felucca, Deceit hosts the Unholy Terror Champion Spawn. The spawn cycle culminates in Neira the Necromancer as the boss champion. Standard Champion Spawn rules apply:
- Power Scrolls drop for skills associated with Neira's theme: Necromancy, Spirit Speak, Magery, Resisting Spells.
- Justice Protection doubles the scroll drop chance for paired players.
- The spawn altar is in a fixed location at the end of the dungeon; players must clear waves of escalating undead before Neira appears.
- Felucca-only: the spawn does not run on Trammel.
Neira's drop table includes high-tier Necromancer-themed loot, including:
- 120 Necromancy Power Scroll (rare)
- Replica artifacts during certain event cycles
- Standard Champion-tier minor artifacts
Strategy notes
- The brazier is fun, not productive. Use it for novelty Dragon-farming during downtime; don't structure a session around it.
- Cure potions on Levels 3-4. The toxic green pools damage HP, and Liches cast Poison and Curse. Carry Greater Cure stacks.
- Lich Lord farming is steady gold. Cast Energy Bolt + Flamestrike rotation; harvest Cursed Items + magic gear from drops. Farmable to GM Magery + Eval Int + Resist by attrition.
- Unholy Terror PvP risk. Neira's spawn in Felucca attracts both farmers and PKs; a 6+ player team is conventional, with at least one stealther for scout duty.
- Justice Pair for the champion. Always Justice-pair for Champion Spawns. Doubles the Power Scroll drop, marginal cost.
- The Honesty virtue is opposite Deceit, but you don't gain Honesty for clearing the dungeon. Honesty is raised by returning Lost items; the Anti-Virtue association is purely thematic, not mechanical.
- Vesper as base. The closest mainland city. Recall to Vesper, sail to Dagger Isle, enter Deceit. The Vesper Bank is the conventional drop-off for Deceit loot.
