Lower Requirements

The Lower Requirements property — usually abbreviated LRC in vendor and crafter parlance, though that abbreviation more commonly refers to Lower Reagent Cost — is the item-property that reduces the Strength Requirement of the item it's stamped on. A weapon or piece of armor with +50% Lower Requirements that nominally requires 80 Strength to equip can be worn by a character with as little as 40 Strength (80 × (1 − 0.50) = 40). The property is the canonical "make heavy gear wearable" mod — every Mage build with a 60-STR character relies on Lower Requirements to wear plate armor, and every cross-build (warrior dabbling in Magery) uses it to free up STR points for INT or DEX.

The property is percentage-based and stacks multiplicatively across pieces (each Lower Requirements value reduces only the requirement on its own item — the values do not combine across multiple equipped pieces). Lower Requirements is universally available — every armor piece, every weapon, and several jewellery slots can carry it via Imbuing, runic crafting, or loot drop.

What Lower Requirements affects

Lower Requirements is explicitly limited to the Strength Requirement of the item it sits on. It does not affect:

What it does NOT affect Why
Skill Required Skill gating is its own hard threshold — no item property reduces it
Weapon damage Lower Requirements is purely an equip-gate property
Armor resists Independent properties
Spell mana cost That's Lower Mana Cost, a separate property
Reagent consumption That's Lower Reagent Cost, a separate property

A common confusion: the abbreviation LRC often means Lower Reagent Cost (the +5%-per-piece-up-to-100% mage property). Lower Requirements has the more specific name and a different mechanic — STR-gate-only reduction.

The percentage formula

Effective_STR_Requirement = Base_STR_Requirement × (1 − LowerRequirements_pct / 100)
Base STR Required +20% Lower Req +50% Lower Req +100% Lower Req
30 24 15 0
60 48 30 0
80 64 40 0
100 80 50 0

At +100% Lower Requirements the STR Requirement is effectively 0 — the item can be equipped by any character regardless of stat. This is the canonical "no-strength-gate" tier and is the goal of every Mage's plate armor optimization.

Sources of Lower Requirements

Source Range / contribution
Imbuing intensity up to +100% per item at GM Imbuing
Runic-crafted armor Random roll; up to ~+50% on Verite/Valorite tier
Reforged armor Up to +100% on a single piece via Reforging at GM crafter skill
Loot drops Random rolls on monster/quest drops
Artifacts Many heritage artifacts ship with native Lower Requirements

The property's Imbuing intensity is 1 slot of a weapon or armor piece's 5-property limit. So Lower Requirements competes with Damage Increase, Hit Spell properties, etc. for the budget. A pure-Mage character with limited STR will trade DI/Hit-spell potential to maintain Lower Requirements at +100%.

Imbuing Lower Requirements

Property Max imbued intensity Resources for the maximum
Lower Requirements (armor) +100% 5 Enchanted Essence + 10 Magic Residue + 10 Crystal Shards
Lower Requirements (weapon) +100% Same

Imbuing Lower Requirements is one of the cheapest endgame intensities — at the highest tier the imbue costs roughly 25 Enchanted Essence, 50 Magic Residue, and 50 Crystal Shards, all of which are mid-tier resources. The cost scales linearly with the percentage rolled — +50% costs roughly half of +100%.

Build implications

The property's reach varies dramatically by build template:

Build LowerReq strategy
Pure Mage (Magery, 50–60 STR) +100% Lower Req on every plate piece — wear full plate without STR investment
Hybrid Tamer (Magery + Pet Training, 80 STR) +50% on most pieces — fits within budget, leaves room for other stats
Pure Warrior (Swordsmanship, 100+ STR) Negligible — natural STR meets all requirements
Sampire (Bushido + Necromancy, 100 STR) Mostly negligible, but +50% on the 2-handed axe lets it equip on a low-STR alt
Throwing Gargoyle (Throwing, 90 STR) +50% on the throwing weapon — frees the rest for racial INT bonus

The Pure Mage is the canonical case where Lower Requirements is load-bearing — without it, the build cannot wear plate armor (which provides the 70% Phys / Fire / Cold / Pois / Energy resist cap that pure cloth cannot reach).

Lower Requirements vs. Mage Armor

The Mage Armor property is a separate mechanism that allows non-medable armor (plate, chain, ring) to regenerate mana normally. Lower Requirements only solves the STR equip gate; Mage Armor solves the mana regeneration penalty. A pure Mage in plate armor needs both:

Property Solves
Lower Requirements STR gate (60-STR mage can equip)
Mage Armor Mana regeneration (mana doesn't tick to zero in plate)

The two properties stack on the same piece — a fully-imbued Mage's chest piece commonly has +100% Lower Requirements + Mage Armor + the Phys/Fire/Cold/Pois/Energy resists, with one slot left for Lower Reagent Cost or Mana Increase.

Lower Requirements on weapons

The property exists on weapons too, but its impact is smaller because most weapons have lower base STR requirements than armor. A Halberd's base STR Req. is 45, a Bow's is 30 — Lower Requirements on these is useful for low-STR characters but rarely a build-defining mod.

The weapon-side Lower Requirements is most commonly seen on Throwing weapons (Soul Glaive's STR Req. 50, useful for low-STR Gargoyle Mystics) and on specialty weapons for cross-skill characters.

Tooltip notation

In an item's tooltip, Lower Requirements displays as:

Lower Requirements +50%

Right above or below the Strength Requirement line:

Strength Requirement: 80
Lower Requirements +50%

The effective Strength Requirement (40, in this case) is not separately listed — the player must compute 80 × (1 − 0.50) mentally. This is one of the canonical "you have to know the math" UO interface quirks.
