Mysticism

A folio of the realm

Mysticism

Mysticism is the elemental-summoning magic of the gargoyle race, the third great spellcasting school added to Britannia with the Stygian Abyss expansion in 2009. It blends arcane and elemental magic with summoning and control: a mystic conjures stone titans, lethal cyclones of nether energy, and animated weapons; cures poison and removes curses with a single Cleansing Winds; bombards foes with magical boulders; and lulls them into sleep. The school's standout feature is its dual-skill scaling — Mysticism is the only school whose spells scale with two skills at once, drawing on either Focus or Imbuing alongside Mysticism itself.

Casting Mechanics

Mysticism spells are cast from a Mystic Spellbook — a separate book from Magery's, distinct in iconography. The school uses the same eight reagents as Magery (Black Pearl, Blood Moss, Garlic, Ginseng, Mandrake Root, Nightshade, Spiders' Silk, Sulfurous Ash); no school-unique reagents are required. Lower Reagent Cost reduces consumption normally.

The Two-Skill Scaling

Every Mysticism spell's effectiveness is determined by a comparison between the caster's Focus or Imbuing skill (whichever is greater) and the caster's Mysticism. Most mystics pair the school with Imbuing — a natural pairing since Imbuing already supports several mage builds, and the Focus skill is otherwise narrow in utility. The damage and duration of summons (Animated Weapon, Rising Colossus), the strength of debuffs (Sleep, Spell Plague), and the resistance of crowd-control spells (Mass Sleep) all key off this dual scaling.

Mana, Skill, and Casting Time

Standard mage caps apply: Faster Casting at 2, Faster Cast Recovery at 6, Lower Mana Cost at 40%, Lower Reagent Cost at 100%. Mana Regeneration accumulates normally. Spell Damage Increase modifies Mysticism direct-damage spells. The casting time formula is consistent with Magery: longer for higher-rank spells.

The Spells of Mysticism

Sixteen standard spells organised into eight ranks of two spells each, plus two Mastery spells. Sorted by minimum skill.

Standard Spells

Spell Mana Min Skill Words of Power Effect
Healing Stone 4 0 Kal In Mani Creates a non-transferable red gem in the caster's backpack with stored healing points; consume on demand.
Nether Bolt 4 0 In Corp Ylem Fires a bolt of nether energy at the target, dealing Chaos damage.
Enchant 6 8 In Ort Ylem Adds up to 60% Hit Spell of choice (Fireball, Harm, Magic Arrow, Lightning, Dispel) to the wielded weapon for a duration.
Purge Magic 6 8 An Ort Sanct Attempts to remove a single buff from the target.
Eagle Strike 9 20 Kal Por Xen Conjures a magical eagle that assaults the target with its talons, dealing Energy damage.
Sleep 8 20 In Zu Places the target in a sleep state — slowed movement and casting, lowered hit and defence chance.
Animated Weapon 11 33 In Jux Por Ylem Conjures and animates a weapon that targets the strongest available enemy; persists for a duration.
Stone Form 11 33 In Rel Ylem Transforms the caster into living stone — bonus physical attack and damage resistance, reduced casting effectiveness.
Mass Sleep 14 45 Vas Zu Places multiple targets within a radius into a temporary sleep state.
Spell Trigger 14 45 In Vas Ort Ex Stores one Mysticism spell in a spell stone; the stone may be activated later to cast the stored spell instantly.
Bombard 20 58 Corp Por Ylem Hurls a magical boulder at the target, dealing Physical damage; may knock back and stun a player victim for 2 seconds.
Cleansing Winds 20 58 In Vas Mani Hur Soothing winds cure poison, lift curses, and heal the target plus up to three nearby party members.
Hail Storm 50 70 Kal Des Ylem Summons a storm of hailstones that strikes every target within a 3-tile radius around the target's location, dealing Cold damage.
Spell Plague 40 70 Vas Rel Jux Ort Curses the target with a spell plague — every harmful action they take risks an explosion backlash of Fire damage.
Nether Cyclone 50 83 Grav Hur Lethal winds strike every target within a 3-tile radius, dealing Chaos damage and draining mana and stamina from each.
Rising Colossus 50 83 Kal Vas Xen Corp Ylem Summons a colossal stone titan; its stats, skills, and duration scale with Focus/Imbuing and Mysticism. Requires 5 pet control slots.

Mastery Spells

Spell Mana Min Skill Words of Power Effect
Mystic Weapon 40 90 Vas Ylem Wis Converts Mysticism skill into the equipped weapon's required skill, in exchange for a Mysticism penalty proportional to mastery level.
Nether Blast 40 90 In Vas Por Grav Releases a wave of nether energy that pulses on attacked targets, dealing Chaos damage scaled by mastery level.

Casting Success Chance

Each rank has a known success curve based on Mysticism skill. The 25% column represents the minimum-skill floor (always at least 25% success); subsequent columns show the skill required for 50%, 75%, and 100% success.

Rank Spells 25% (min) 50% 75% 100%
1 Healing Stone, Nether Bolt 0 12.5 25 37.5
2 Enchant, Purge Magic 8 20.5 33 45.5
3 Eagle Strike, Sleep 20 32.5 45 57.5
4 Animated Weapon, Stone Form 33 45.5 58 70.5
5 Mass Sleep, Spell Trigger 45 57.5 70 82.5
6 Bombard, Cleansing Winds 58 70.5 83 95.5
7 Hail Storm, Spell Plague 70 82.5 95 107.5†
8 Nether Cyclone, Rising Colossus 83 95.5 108† 120.5‡

Power Scroll required to exceed 100 skill. ‡ 100% success is unattainable for Rank 8 spells; 99% is the cap at 120 Mysticism.

The Forms

Stone Form is the school's signature self-transformation. The caster gains a Physical-Resist boost and a melee damage bonus at the cost of casting effectiveness. It is Mysticism's answer to Necromancy's Wraith Form or Lich Form, but tuned for melee-mystic hybrids rather than pure casters.

The Summons

Mysticism's summon roster spans three distinct creatures, each suited to a different role:

  • Animated Weapon — a low-cost early-game summon that auto-targets the strongest nearby enemy. Useful filler in PvE.
  • Rising Colossus — the late-game showpiece. A 5-control-slot stone titan whose intelligence and durability scale with the caster's combined Focus/Imbuing and Mysticism. Capable of soloing modest dungeon packs while the caster supports.
  • Eagle Strike — technically a one-time summoned attack rather than a persistent pet, but mechanically the same family.

The Rising Colossus' control-slot cost is intentionally heavy — it occupies the entire control allowance of a typical character, leaving no room for tame pets while it persists.

Training

A clean training progression with a high-LRC mage suit:

Mass Sleep and Spell Trigger are also viable mid-tier training spells. Most mystics maintain a Healing Stone at all times — it is essentially a free heal-on-demand for any caster.

Useful Equipment

The same caps that benefit Magery and Necromancy apply to Mysticism:

The unique implication for Mysticism: investing in Imbuing simultaneously raises a mystic's casting effectiveness via the dual-skill scaling, making Imbuing one of the highest-leverage secondary skills for any mystic build.

Power Scrolls

The skill cap for Mysticism is raised from 100 to 120 by Power Scroll consumption in five-point increments — 105, 110, 115, 120. Mysticism Power Scrolls drop from Champion Spawn bosses, like the Power Scrolls for the other casting schools.

Lore

Mysticism was introduced with the Stygian Abyss expansion in 2009 alongside the introduction of the Gargoyle race as a playable option. Lore-wise, Mysticism is the magical tradition of the gargoyles of Ter Mur — distinct from human Magery in both source and method. The Mastery spells were added in subsequent updates, expanding the school's late-game depth in line with the rest of Britannia's magic schools.

The Codex's own Imbuing Calculator treats Mysticism's relationship to Imbuing as load-bearing: the calculator's interface assumes a player will pair the two when planning a mystic suit.
