Reward Title
Reward Title
A Reward Title is one of the four classes of character title that Ultima Online characters may display on their Paperdoll and overhead nameplate. Where the other three — Skill Title, Champion Title, and the Reputation Title System (Fame/Karma) — are earned automatically as a side-effect of skill levels, kills, or alignment, a Reward Title is explicitly granted by an in-game system as the named output of a specific reward chain. The canonical examples — "the Brewer" from Alchemy BOD rewards, "the Clerk" from Inscription BOD, "Huntmaster's Champion" from the Huntmaster's Challenge, "Britain Public Library Contributor" from the Britain Public Library — are awarded as single-use Title Deeds dropped into the player's pack on completion of the underlying reward path. Once consumed, the title joins the character's Title Menu (opened from the Contextual Menu) and can thereafter be displayed, hidden, or swapped at any time.
This page covers the Reward Title system end-to-end: where Reward Titles come from, how they differ from the other three title classes, the Title Menu display surfaces, and the canonical earning paths.
The four classes of character title
The Title system, originally consolidated in the Stygian Abyss era, defines four orthogonal title classes that can be displayed independently:
| Class | Earning method | Display surface | Decay | Stackable with other classes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Reputation Title | Auto from Fame and Karma | Paperdoll prefix ("Lord", "Lady", "The Dread", etc.) | None | Yes |
| Skill Title | Auto from Skills value (Neophyte → Legendary) | Paperdoll suffix and overhead | None | Yes |
| Champion Title | Auto from Champion Spawn and Harrower kills | Paperdoll suffix | Decays over months without re-kills | Yes |
| Reward Title | Granted by reward chain — BOD, quest, event, donation | Subtitle (small line below overhead name) | None | Yes |
The crucial structural difference is that Reward Titles are the only class earned through deliberate reward grants rather than as a passive output of play. Every Reward Title traces back to a discrete reward chain — a BOD turn-in that hits a points threshold, a Cleanup Britannia reward stone, a quest completion, an event participation. This is why Reward Titles are the principal class associated with achievement-style flexing: they are objective, opt-in, and signal the player did something specific to get them.
Where Reward Titles come from
Reward Titles are awarded across many systems. The major sources, ordered by lifetime issuance volume:
Bulk Order Deed reward bags
The largest single source. Every Bulk Order Deed reward bag has a chance to include a Reward Title Deed alongside the bag's primary rewards (Powder of Fortifying, Runic Tools, Power Scrolls). The titles are profession-themed:
| Skill | Reward Title roster |
|---|---|
| Blacksmithy | the Smith, the Forger, the Ironworker, Master Craftsman |
| Tailoring | the Tailor, the Seamstress, the Weaver, Master Tailor |
| Alchemy | the Brewer, the Alchemist, the Chemist |
| Inscription | the Clerk, the Scribe, Master Scribe |
| Carpentry | the Woodworker, the Joiner, Master Carpenter |
| Fletching | the Bowyer, the Fletcher |
| Tinkering | the Tinker, the Artisan |
| Cooking | the Cook, the Chef |
Each is a single-use Title Deed — double-click to consume, the title is permanently added to the character's Title Menu. The deed is tradeable before consumption — Reward Title Deeds appear regularly on Player Vendors, especially the Luna corridor. Once consumed, the title is soulbound and cannot be transferred to another character.
Cleanup Britannia reward stones
The Cleanup Britannia reward economy includes a dedicated Reward Title Deed category on its reward stones in major-city banks. Titles are themed by the reward officer (the Custodian, Britannian Patron, Civic Guardian); pricing in the reward-point currency runs from low- to mid-tier on the reward-stone catalogue.
Quest and event chains
Many one-shot quest chains end in a Reward Title Deed:
- Huntmaster's Challenge (the Yew hunting tournament) — Huntmaster's Champion title, plus a Reward Title Token used as a bonus-item ladder.
- Treasures of Tokuno — title rewards on the redemption ladder via Ihara Soko at the Rokuen Cultural Center.
- Cooperative Collections (the Britain Public Library, Britannia Zoo, and other donation-driven collections) — contributor titles such as Britain Public Library Contributor, Britannia Zoo Contributor. Each Cooperative Collection has a per-tier title ladder; reaching the top tier awards the headline title plus secondary cosmetics.
- Character Statue Maker quest — completion title bundled with the character-statue placeable.
- Event-specific titles — Halloween, Anniversary, Cleanup Britannia events frequently mint year-tagged titles ("Pumpkin Slayer 2018", "27th Anniversary Patron").
- Faction- and shard-specific titles — some shard rulesets and the legacy Factions / VvV systems award alignment-themed Reward Titles tied to specific roles (Commander, Sergeant, Recruit).
Donation and account-status titles
A small set of Reward Titles come from real-world account actions rather than in-game play:
- Veteran Reward-tier titles — the highest age-tier (15-year) Veteran Reward includes a special-edition character title scroll. This is technically a Veteran Reward but is consumed and displayed via the Reward Title system, so the Title Menu treats them as a Reward Title for display purposes.
- Heritage and promotional titles — historical titles from the Heritage Token and Stygian Abyss collector-pack systems.
How a Reward Title is consumed
The interaction model is uniform across sources:
- The reward chain delivers a Reward Title Deed (or equivalent token) to the player's pack.
- Double-click the deed. A confirmation gump appears: "This will permanently grant the title \"[X]\" to this character. The deed will be consumed. Continue?"
- On confirm, the deed is destroyed. The title is added to the character's Title Menu roster.
- The title can thereafter be toggled on/off from the Title Menu (see below). The character does not lose the title regardless of how many times it is toggled.
The deed is tradeable between characters and accounts up to the moment of consumption. After consumption, the title is soulbound to the consuming character. There is no path to transfer a consumed title to another character; the only way to share a deed is to leave it untouched and trade or sell it.
The Title Menu
The Title Menu is the management gump for all consumed titles on a character. It is opened from the Contextual Menu on the player's own character (right-click your own paperdoll → Titles). The gump exposes four display surfaces that can be configured independently:
| Surface | Where it shows | Eligible classes |
|---|---|---|
| Paperdoll Prefix | Before the character name on the paperdoll, e.g., "Lord Galahad" | Reputation Title only (Fame/Karma) |
| Paperdoll Suffix | After the character name on the paperdoll, e.g., "Galahad, Master Craftsman" | Skill Title, Champion Title |
| Overhead Name | The single-line text floating above the character | Skill Title; guild abbreviation |
| Subtitle | The smaller second line below the overhead name | Reward Title, guild title text |
The "Subtitle" surface is the canonical home for Reward Titles. A player who has consumed a Britain Public Library Contributor deed and wants to advertise it picks the title from the Title Menu, sets the Subtitle slot, and the title appears as a small italicised line below their character's overhead name on every shard the character logs into.
Notable design points
- Reward Titles are gendered where it matters. Some titles (the Seamstress, Master Tailor) check the character gender at consumption and adjust the displayed text. Most are gender-neutral.
- Multi-character account decisions. A Reward Title Deed obtained by Character A can be moved to Character B's pack via the Bank, but only one character on the account can ever consume any given deed. Account-shared title pools do not exist; each character's Title Menu is independent.
- No permanent loss. Reward Titles are immune to the Champion Title decay mechanic — once granted, a Reward Title is permanently in the character's Title Menu. Death, deletion, character-shard-transfer all preserve the consumed-title roster (deletion does of course destroy the character entirely).
- Display does not have to be the consumed title. A character with five different Reward Titles in the Title Menu chooses which one to display from the dropdown; the others remain available to swap to at any time.
- Cross-shard portability. Reward Titles travel with the character on a shard transfer; the underlying data is stored on the character record.
