Yew
Yew
Yew is the City of Justice, a pastoral homestead community in the northwest of mainland Britannia. It is named for the dense yew-tree population that surrounds it, and architecturally it is the least city-like of Britannia's eight virtue-cities — a constellation of cabins, abbey grounds, dirt roads, and the country's second-largest jail. The seat of the Empath Abbey, the elven gateway to the Heartwood city, the home of the Britannian wine industry, and the legal capital of the realm.

The Justice virtue's home dungeon is Wrong — the prison-themed dungeon north of the city. The thematic alignment runs deep: Yew is law-abiding country (Empath Abbey, Court of Truth, Britannian Prison), while just to the north and west lie the orcish raiders, evil mages, and corrupt jailers of Wrong dungeon.
Landmarks
Empath Abbey
The hallowed centerpiece of Yew. Stone-built (in contrast to the city's wooden cabins), home to the diligent monks who produce Britannia's finest wine. The abbey houses the Yew Bank within its walls (70°34'N 47°19'W). Empath Abbey is one of the few buildings on the mainland old enough to be canonical from the single-player Ultima series.
Court of Truth
(62°59'N 67°28'W) The country's second-largest jail, made entirely of reinforced stone, an architectural mini-castle styled on Lord British's Castle Britannia. The Yew Court is the formal seat of Britannian Justice — where serious criminals stand trial. Lore-wise, the Court paired with the nearby Britannian Prison serves as the legal capital outside Castle Britannia itself.
Ye Olde Winery
(64°45'N 48°50'W) The wine production house. Beneath Ye Olde Winery is the Cavern of the Candle of Love (65°50'N 49°59'W) — one of the three Principles of Britannia (Truth, Love, Courage), specifically the embodiment of Love. The cavern is normally closed off, but blessed candles lit by the Candle of Love are owned by some long-time players and seen occasionally as house deco.
Yew Moongate
(76°31'N 38°31'W) The conventional teleport entry point. Yew is the canonical northwest waypoint for Britannia traversal; recall runes in this moongate area are standard issue for any new character's runebook.
Heartwood Portal
The center of Yew proper holds the portal to the Elf city of Heartwood. The portal is the entry point to the Mondain's Legacy elven content — Heartwood is the elf-only crafting and quest hub. Even non-Elves can travel through the portal but must respect Heartwood's elf-favoring NPC interactions.
Britannian Prison
Adjacent to the Court of Truth. The prison's stone construction matches the Court; together the two structures form Yew's law-enforcement compound. Quest content occasionally uses the prison as a setting (escapees, stolen evidence quests).
Yew Mill
(69°14'N 53°54'W) The functional gristmill at the city's edge. Decorative but lore-anchored.
Yew Cemetery and Crypts
- Yew Cemetery (43°30'N 42°11'W) — the formal graveyard.
- Yew Crypts (75°24'N 24°45'W) — separate crypt complex with low-tier undead spawn (Skeletons, Zombies, Mummies). Useful for low-level necromancy and PvE training.
Yew Orc Fort
(11°15'N 48°30'W) Far to the north. Orcish stronghold; high orc spawn rate, suitable for archery and swordsman skill grinding. Pivotal location during the Juka invasions and orc-raid event cycles.
Lighthouse Passage
(72°41'N 71°0'W) Connects to the Lighthouse location.

Yew runs a smaller shop circuit than Britain or Vesper but covers all essentials:

Yew Sheep Pens — the Parry training spot
The most-used Parrying training location in Britannia. The sheep pens at the Empath Abbey produce a steady supply of weak sheep — the universal target for the modern Naked Parry training method. Eight sheep can surround a parry trainer in cat form; their wrestling skill rises with the parrier's parry skill, keeping the contested-hit rate up. A character can train Parry from 0 to 120 in the Yew sheep pens in a few hours. See the Parrying article for the full naked-parry method.
History and lore
- Pre-UO Ultima canon: Yew was already the City of Justice in the Ultima single-player series; the Court of Truth appears as the legal capital in Ultima IV.
- Heartwood portal addition: the elf city portal was added with the Mondain's Legacy expansion in 2005, repositioning Yew as the human-elf gateway.
- Juka and Orc invasions: Yew's orc fort spawn cycles relate to the Mondain's Legacy Juka war and earlier orc raid event arcs.
- Faction control: in Felucca, Yew is one of the cities that change hands during Faction or VvV cycles. The Council of Mages held Yew during much of the Factions era.
Strategy notes
- Wine economy. Empath Abbey wine is part of the long-running Vintner's Guild quest line; Yew is the gold-source endpoint for any winery-related quest.
- Justice virtue rises in Yew. Killing red-flagged murderers anywhere in Britannia raises Justice, but the active mantra invocation is at the Yew shrine. The Justice Protector pairing (Power Scroll drop bonus) starts with shrine activation.
- Recall rune to the Yew bank. Inside Empath Abbey is one of the more secure banks in Britannia — guards are dense, the abbey monks act as soft NPCs, and the location is non-PvP in Trammel. A common new-character home rune.
- Wrong dungeon is northwest. The Justice opposing-sin dungeon is a short ride from Yew. New warriors training to GM weapon skills cycle Wrong's low-level evil mages and ratmen mid-build.
- Heartwood travel via Yew is mandatory. Non-elves can use the portal but face elf-NPC interaction friction; an Elf character runs back through Yew to reach Heartwood without delay.
- Empath Abbey bank is plate-armor friendly. Crafters dropping bulk smithing/tailoring orders use the abbey because it's spacious and traffic is low compared to the West Britain Bank.
