Cleanup Britannia

A folio of the realm

Cleanup Britannia

Cleanup Britannia is UO's long-running trash-for-points reward system — a player-side recycling program where unwanted items (event-era artifacts, old artifacts, stat-scroll dupes, junk loot, retired event drops) are exchanged with NPC turn-in collectors for Cleanup Britannia Points, which are then redeemed for desirable rewards: Soulstone Fragments, Goza Mats, Ethereal Mounts, decorative items, rare titles, and event-era memorabilia. Originally introduced in Publish 64 (April 2010) as a way to reduce server-side item bloat from a decade of event drops, the system has been expanded across many publishes and now includes hundreds of accepted item types.

For long-running characters with a vault of accumulated event detritus, Cleanup Britannia is one of the highest-value uses of "junk" items in UO. A vault of ~50 old event artifacts can yield hundreds of millions of points — enough for a full set of Ethereal Mounts and an inventory of Soulstone Fragments.

How the system works

Step What happens
1 Acquire an accepted item (event artifact, old loot, retired drop).
2 Visit a Cleanup Britannia NPC in any major city — Britain, Trinsic, Yew, Vesper, Skara Brae, etc.
3 Open the trade window. Drop the item onto the NPC.
4 The NPC awards Cleanup Britannia Points to your account. The item is destroyed.
5 Visit a Reward Stone (in any major city) and spend points on rewards.

Points are account-bound, persist across characters and across logins, and never expire. They accumulate over the entire lifetime of an account.

Cleanup Britannia NPCs

Located in major cities, identifiable by their "Cleanup Officer" title. Common locations:

Each NPC accepts the same items and pays the same point values; choose by convenience.

Reward Stones

The Reward Stone (sometimes "Cleanup Britannia Reward Stone" or "Britannia Reward Stone") sits in major cities, displaying available rewards organized by category. Categories include:

Category Examples
Storage Soulstone Fragment, Soulstone (full), Talismans of Storage
Mounts Ethereal Horse, Ethereal Llama, Ethereal Ostard, Ethereal Ridgeback, Ethereal Beetle, Ethereal Hiryu, Ethereal Cu Sidhe, Ethereal Boura
Decorative Goza Mats, Banners, Statues, Carpets, Wall hangings, Decorative armor
Functional Talismans (various skill bonuses), Cloth/Cloth Dyes, Armor and weapon decoration kits
Tokens Account-wide unlocks (titles, character traits)
Special Limited-time rewards tied to publishes

Each item has a fixed point cost. Most run from a few thousand points (a basic decorative item) to several million (Ethereal mounts).

Accepted items — the broad shape

The list of accepted items is extensive (hundreds of types) and grows with each publish. Categories that always count:

Category Examples
Event Artifacts Treasures of Tokuno (all versions), Halloween event drops, Christmas event drops, Bone Crusher, Cloak of Corruption, etc.
Old Artifacts Pre-AoS artifacts, Doom artifacts (with caveats), Champion Spawn replicas
Replica items Most ML-era and SA-era replicas
Power Scrolls Yes — but at low rates; rarely worth it for tier-3+ scrolls
Stat Scrolls Yes — duplicates after you've used the +25 are good Cleanup fodder
Mastery Primers Some accepted; check NPC menu
Old quest-completion items Many accepted

The NPC's "Show items" option opens a complete list of currently-accepted items with their point values.

Point values — the broad scaling

Item point values vary widely. Approximate scaling:

Item type Typical points
Common event drop (Halloween mask, Christmas pet leash) 100–1,000
Mid-tier event artifact 1,000–5,000
Treasures of Tokuno minor artifact 5,000–15,000
Treasures of Tokuno major artifact 30,000–100,000
Pre-AoS Vanquishing-class weapon 1,000–10,000
Stat Scroll +5 (Wondrous) 50,000
Stat Scroll +25 (Ultimate, duplicate) 500,000+

The exact values change with publish balance updates; check the NPC menu for current values.

Strategic uses

For old accounts

A 6+ month account with a decade of event drops in storage chests is sitting on millions of unredeemed Cleanup Britannia points. Recommended sequence:

  1. Sort storage — group all event-era items by type.
  2. Visit a Cleanup NPC with manageable batches (the trade window has space limits).
  3. Trade — point totals accumulate across sessions.
  4. Redeem at a Reward Stone — start with Ethereal Mounts (high value-per-effort) and Soulstone Fragments (5-charge skill-storage bricks).

For active event participants

Some events are run with the explicit understanding that the drops are Cleanup Britannia fodder — a deliberate "extra reward" mechanic. The 2010s Halloween and Christmas events fit this pattern. New event drops that hit the Cleanup list immediately establish a market value: collectors hold for rarity, others trade for points.

For fresh characters

Cleanup is not a starter income source — points require acquiring event items first, and most fresh accounts don't have a backlog. But points are valuable late-game; building a habit of holding old items and turning them in periodically yields steady reward flow.

Gold equivalence

Cleanup points can be roughly converted to gold via the rewards:

Reward Points cost Gold equivalent (rough)
Soulstone Fragment 50,000 1m–3m gp on the player market
Ethereal Horse 250,000 10m–25m gp
Goza Mat (decorative) 10,000 0.5m–1m gp
Talisman of Storage 30,000 1m–2m gp

These are approximate and vary by shard. The "official" exchange is points-for-rewards; gold-for-points is implicit through the player market for the rewards.
