Makoto-Jima

A folio of the realm

Makoto-Jima

Makoto-Jima is the smallest island in the Tokuno Islands group, introduced with the Samurai Empire expansion (2004). The island is dominated by the Phoenix Mountains that bisect it east-to-west, but is principally famous as the home of Zento — the only city on the entire Tokuno facet. Beyond Zento, Makoto-Jima offers two main wilderness zones: the Phoenix Mountains (a miner's paradise with four passes and pastoral wildlife) and The Waste (a vast desert in the north hosting low-level undead, orcs, and Deathwatch Beetles, with NPC Healers — making it an excellent training arena for new Tokuno-era characters). The island also hosts Inu's Home in the Waste — the residence of Inu the Crone, with her famous Rune Beetle Kurai Kabuto.

Geography

Makoto-Jima Moongate

Coordinates 36° 54' N, 36° 37' W

The primary access point to Makoto-Jima from any Britannian moongate.

Phoenix Mountains

A mountain range bisects the island, with four passes through them. The easiest pass to navigate is the one due north of the City of Zento. The mountains appear to be a miner's paradise — a mineable, ore-rich environment that complements Zento's blacksmith infrastructure.

Spawn
Black Bear Crane
Dire Wolf Gaman
Grey Wolf Horse
Llama Rideable Llama
Sheep Timber Wolf

The pastoral wildlife — Black Bear, Dire Wolf, Sheep, Horse — makes the Phoenix Mountains a moderate-tier hunting zone suitable for low-mid level adventurers. The wolf-pair (Dire Wolf, Grey Wolf, Timber Wolf) spawning together provide a focused wolf-hunt opportunity for fur-tailored characters.

The Waste

A great desert encompassing the northern half of Makoto-Jima.

Low-level undead, orcs, two varieties of Deathwatch Beetles, and NPC Healers make the Waste a great training arena.

The Waste is one of UO's best newbie-zones for adventurers leveling skills and stats — undead and orcs in a desert environment, with NPC Healers present for safety, plus two Deathwatch Beetle variants (regular Deathwatch Beetle + Deathwatch Beetle Hatchling).

Spawn
Bone Knight Bone Magi

Inu's House & Beetle

A must-see in the Waste: Inu the Crone's home. Inu is a legendary NPC in Tokuno fiction, frequently referenced in BNN articles (the Inu series — Inu, Chapter 1 etc).

Be sure to look for Inu's Rune Beetle, Kurai Kabuto.

Kurai Kabuto is Inu's named Rune Beetle — a unique pet attached to her home. Visiting players can observe Kurai Kabuto's distinct appearance (the regular Rune Beetle is rarely seen named).

Zento

The only city on Makoto-Jima — and the only city on the entire Tokuno Islands facet. See main article: Zento.

Zento sits within the Phoenix Mountains' lower (south) slopes, near the moongate, and is the natural arrival-and-departure point for any visitor to Makoto-Jima.

Strategic and lore notes

  • Smallest of the Tokuno islands = most navigable on foot. The full island can be crossed in 5-10 minutes.
  • Phoenix Mountains four-pass access = no choke points. A character cannot be "trapped" on Makoto-Jima by terrain.
  • The Waste's NPC Healers make it the canonical low-tier Tokuno training zone — pair Orc/Skeleton spawn with safe healing.
  • Inu the Crone has appeared across multiple BNN articles and Tokuno-era event-cycle storylines — she is a memorable named NPC, not just a flavor character.
  • Kurai Kabuto (Inu's Rune Beetle) is one of UO's named non-tameable pets — visit-worthy for collectors of "named NPC pet" details.

Cultural notes

  • Cranes appear pacifist throughout — they do not attack, do not provide artifact drops (a known design choice for the cosmetic crane sprite).
  • Two Deathwatch Beetle variants in The Waste = double the spawn pressure and double the loot variety.
  • Orc Captain in the Waste = boss-tier presence in a low-tier zone — gives newer characters a target to graduate up to.
