Tangle

Tangle in Britannia is two distinct things sharing one name — a swamp monster from Mondain's Legacy and the "Tangle" Half Apron artifact from Stygian Abyss. The two are unrelated mechanics-wise but share the canonical name. The monster is a moderately-tough swamp encounter that drops mid-tier loot; the artifact is a chest-slot piece worn for its +15 Mana Increase + Lower Mana Cost profile, popular on Mage and Spellweaver builds. This article covers both forms, with separate sections for each.

Tangle (Mondain's Legacy swamp monster)

The Tangle monster is a swamp-dwelling creature introduced in Mondain's Legacy (2005). It is a moderate-to-tough PvE target — not a boss-tier encounter, but more dangerous than baseline animals.

Stats and combat

Attribute Value
HP range ~600 — 800
Strength / Dex / Int High STR (180+), moderate DEX, moderate INT
Damage type Mostly Physical with a Poison component
Resistances High Physical (~50%), moderate Fire/Cold, lower Energy
Notable abilities Poison-tipped attacks (similar to swamp tendril mechanics)
Loot Moderate gold, Mondain's Legacy minor artifact rolls
Taming Difficulty Generally not tameable
Barding Difficulty Mid-range; 80 — 90

Where to find Tangles

Tangles spawn in Mondain's Legacy swamp areas, particularly in Heartwood outskirts and in the swampland surrounding Painted Caves. Spawn rates are moderate — a player in a swamp area can expect to encounter Tangles within minutes of arrival.

Tangle as a training target

For Provocation Bards in the 80 — 90 Barding Difficulty range, Tangles in Mondain's Legacy swamp can be a viable mid-tier training target. They're tougher than mainland fauna but more forgiving than dragons or daemons.

Tangle (Stygian Abyss Half Apron artifact)

The Tangle Half Apron is a chest-slot artifact introduced in Stygian Abyss (2009). It is one of the canonical "Mage chest piece" artifacts in the SA-era loadout.

Properties

Property Value
Slot Chest (worn under armor or as cosmetic)
Mana Increase +15 Mana Increase
Lower Mana Cost +10% Lower Mana Cost
Insurance value Insurable; standard item
Source Stygian Abyss boss-loot drop (specific bosses; rare drop)
Race wearable All races

The combination of +15 Mana Increase + 10% LMC makes Tangle the canonical Mage chest piece — particularly for Spellweavers who need both maximum mana pool and reduced mana cost on every cast.

Tangle in Mage builds

Build Tangle role
Pure Mage (Magery, 100+ INT) Foundational chest slot
Pure Spellweaver (Spellweaving) Equally valuable for maximum mana pool + LMC
Mage / Bard hybrid Possible but Tangle's INT-heavy profile may be wasted
Mage / Tamer Strong — Tangle's MR-friendly profile pairs with Pet Training

The canonical "Mage Tangle setup" pairs Tangle with a Mage Weapon talisman, Mana-rich jewellery, and a Lower Reagent Cost ring. The result is a Mage with massive mana pool, low cost-per-cast, and high regen.

Acquisition

Tangle drops from specific Stygian Abyss bosses as a low-percentage roll. The boss roster:

Boss Drop chance
Lady Mel (Stygian Abyss Dungeon) Modest
Niporailem Lower
Other SA bosses Various

For most players, acquiring a Tangle takes a series of boss kills — typically 5 — 20 attempts before a drop lands.

Tangle vs. parallel chest artifacts

Several other chest-slot artifacts compete with Tangle:

Artifact Properties When to choose
Tangle +15 MI + 10% LMC Pure Mage; Spellweaver
Greymist Cuirass +15 LRC + minor stats Reagent-cost-focused builds
Imbued chest Custom — anything goes Maximum customization, high cost
Stratics Bracers + Sash Race-flavor + minor stats Cosmetic-flavored pure-stat builds

For a Mage, Tangle is the best non-imbued chest — its property profile beats most rolled loot. For a Sampire or warrior, Tangle's mana-focus is wasted; the imbued chest path is preferred.

When NOT to use Tangle (artifact)

Situation Reason
Pure warrior / Sampire Mana stats are wasted — go imbued for STR/DI
Bard without Magery Unless party-cast Spellweaving, Mana is over-budgeted
Throwing Gargoyle Race uses different chest piece (Gargoyle plate); Tangle doesn't fit
