The Training Dummy is an House Addon created by carpenters for fighters. When placed next to other dummies they merge into one large structure. An axe can be used on it to re-deed it. It can be crafted to face:

Using a dummy will allow you to gain in Swordsmanship, Mace Fighting or Fencing skill to up to a maximum of 25.0 points (depending on which weapon type you have equipped). With each strike of the dummy, you must wait three seconds before you can try again.

There is a small chance of gaining Tactics while training in this way, but not Wrestling, Anatomy or Lumberjacking. Since you are not actually "fighting" the dummy your weapon will not lose durability.

Note that an Advanced Training Dummy can train any weapon skill up to 60.0.
