Heartwood
Heartwood
Heartwood is the Elven capital of Britannia — a sprawling, organic, tree-built city deep in a primeval forest, accessible only through a single set of guarded gates. It was introduced as the centerpiece destination of Mondain's Legacy in August 2005, alongside the Elf playable race, and it remains the canonical home of every Elven character. Heartwood is also the home of the Heartwood quest chain — a long-form series of 22 quests handed out by the Elven townsfolk, each rewarding the runner with rare crafting materials, recipes, and the famously coveted Heartwood Runic Crafting Tools.
The city's architecture is unique in the game: the buildings are grown into living trees, walkways spiral up trunks, and the entire skyline is canopy rather than rooftops. There is no plate-armored knight in sight; the residents are Elves in earth-toned cloth and leather, and the music is a slow, melodic ambient track that makes the area feel hushed and ancient.
Getting to Heartwood
Heartwood sits in a hidden grove accessible only through the Sanctuary in Ilshenar — there is no boat, no moongate, no recall destination directly into Heartwood. The canonical route:
| Step | Location |
|---|---|
| 1. Recall to a moonstone or moongate to Ilshenar | Felucca/Trammel → Ilshenar moongate |
| 2. Travel to the Sanctuary entrance | A guarded clearing in southern Ilshenar |
| 3. Walk through the Sanctuary | A short forest passage with elf guardians |
| 4. Step through the inner gate | Heartwood proper |
The Sanctuary entrance is the canonical "you must walk to it" zone — both Felucca and Trammel routes converge through Ilshenar, so a Tamer with a Cu Sidhe and a horseman with a fast mount get there at the same speed. There is no fast-travel skip.
After Publish 56 added a Heartwood moongate destination to certain mainland gates, established Elven characters can recall directly via runebook to a marked spot in Heartwood once they have visited at least once. New Elves still walk in.
The Heartwood quest chain
The 22 Heartwood quests are the canonical "do them all" Elven content of Mondain's Legacy. They are assigned by 12 different NPC quest-givers across the city — Patricus, Tamomi, Sleen, Vilo, and others. The chain is not strictly sequential — many run independently — but several have prerequisites that gate the higher-tier rewards. The pacing is slow by design: each quest takes 30 minutes to several hours of in-game time, and the full set occupies a typical player for a long evening or two.
Reward classes:
| Class | What it gives |
|---|---|
| Heartwood Runic Tools | Rare cycle-rolled crafting tools — the entire reason most players run the chain |
| Recipes | Mortars, looms, and ingredient-specific crafting recipes |
| Decorative items | Goblets, plates, statues, place-able art |
| Rare resources | Heartwood Logs (Carpentry tier), Boura/Hiryu Hides (Tailoring), Cobalt resources |
The Runic Tool prizes
The most-sought rewards from the Heartwood chain are the Heartwood Runic Tools — randomized-tier crafting tools that produce Exceptional crafted weapons, armor, fletchings, and crafted goods with a chance for runic-tier modifier rolls.
| Runic tool | Skill | What it crafts |
|---|---|---|
| Heartwood Runic Hammer | Blacksmithy | Weapons + armor with Heartwood runic modifiers |
| Heartwood Runic Sewing Kit | Tailoring | Armor + clothing with Heartwood runic modifiers |
| Heartwood Runic Dovetail Saw | Carpentry | Wood-based armor + furniture with runic modifiers |
| Heartwood Runic Fletcher's Tools | Bowcraft / Fletching | Archery weapons with runic modifiers |
The Heartwood runics are mid-to-high tier crafting tools — between standard runic kits and the legendary Valorite/Verite end-game runics. They are particularly desirable because they're the only way to roll the rare Heartwood-flavoured modifier set onto crafted items.
NPCs and services
Heartwood has the standard town services plus several race-restricted Elf-only quest-givers:
| Service | Where in Heartwood |
|---|---|
| Bank, healer, mage shop | Central plaza |
| Patricus (master quest-giver) | Heartwood Hall |
| Tamomi, Sleen, Vilo | Various Heartwood buildings |
| Provisioner (Elf-only race-restricted shop) | West side |
| Tinker, Carpenter, Tailor | The standard craft NPCs are clustered on the south flank |
| Stable Master | South stable building |
The race-restricted shops are the canonical reason every Tamer with an Elven alt visits at least once — certain Elven recipe-locked items are sold only to Elf characters here.
Heartwood as a base camp
Established players use Heartwood as a second-tier home for several reasons:
| Use case | Why Heartwood |
|---|---|
| Carpentry / Bowcraft training | The Heartwood-themed crafting tools and recipes drop here |
| Runic Tool farming | The Heartwood quest chain rewards the four runic tools at random |
| Elven RP / RP-server | The native Elven setting is unique |
| House plot location | The Heartwood spawn zone has plots that are high-status among Elf players |
For the canonical Tamer / Sampire / Mage build, Heartwood is a destination rather than a home — the quest chain's runic rewards are run through periodically, then the player returns to a mainland city for the bulk of their craft work.
Heartwood and the Elf race
The Elf race was introduced simultaneously with Heartwood in Publish 36 (the Mondain's Legacy launch). Every Elf character chooses Heartwood as their starter location at character-creation, and the city's architecture, NPCs, and quest chain are all race-themed Elven content rather than the generic Britannian shape. Notable Elf-race mechanics that surface in Heartwood:
| Mechanic | Detail |
|---|---|
| Stat modifiers | Elves get +20 max INT and -20 max STR vs. humans |
| Wisdom of the Elves | +1 Mana Regeneration, +5% LRC vs. human baseline |
| Race-restricted items | Some Elven-only quest rewards (Heartwood Runic recipes) require Elf race to use |
| Heartwood as starter | New Elves spawn in the Heartwood Hall |
Human characters can still visit Heartwood freely — no race lock on the city itself. Only specific items + recipes are race-restricted.
Heartwood as a quest hub vs. as a city
Heartwood sits in an unusual middle ground in the Britannian city roster — it has a fully populated NPC layout (bank, healer, all crafts) so it functions like a regular city for residents, but its active player population is smaller than Britain or Magincia because the Heartwood quest chain is the dominant draw and most players run it once and leave. The city is canonically active during ML quest cycles and during cross-shard events, otherwise quiet.
