A folio of the realm

Mastery Primer

A Mastery Primer is a tier-locked unlock item for the Skill Masteries system. Reading a primer for a given skill grants you that skill's mastery at the tier indicated on the primer; higher tiers grant the active and passive abilities of the lower tiers retroactively. Primers drop from all Champion Spawns, from the high-seas bosses Charybdis and Scalis, and feature the same loot-table mechanics as Power Scrolls — including Justice virtue Protector eligibility for the Felucca facet drop chance.

Tier system

Each skill has three tiers of mastery, each unlocked by a primer of the matching tier:

Tier Intensity Granted retroactively
Tier 1 Base level — minimum effect intensity Granted by Tier 1, 2, or 3 primer
Tier 2 Mid level — moderate intensity Granted by Tier 2 or 3 primer; Tier 1 also unlocked
Tier 3 Maximum level — full intensity Granted by Tier 3 primer; Tiers 1 and 2 also unlocked

The retroactive-grant rule means you only need the highest tier: a Tier 3 primer is a complete unlock. You never need to find a Tier 1 first.

Drop sources

Source Mastery Primer drop chance
Champion Spawn (any) Random; same drop pool as Power Scrolls
Charybdis (sea boss, High Seas) Random; same pool
Scalis (Mythical sea boss) Random; same pool

The randomly-selected skill on the primer is uniform: any mastery-supported skill may roll. The randomly-selected tier is weighted toward Tier 1 (most common), with Tier 3 the rarest.

Felucca bonus

Champion Spawn drops in Felucca are eligible for the Justice Virtue Protector chance — a Justice Protector who escorts the spawn-completer through the spawn area gets a percentage chance to receive a duplicate primer drop. This applies to Mastery Primers exactly as it applies to Power Scrolls.

Reading a primer

Use the primer (double-click). A confirmation gump appears: "Reading this primer will grant you the [Skill] Mastery at Tier [N]. Continue?" Confirming consumes the primer (it is destroyed) and unlocks the mastery permanently for that character.

The unlock is per-character and never expires. Your unlocks persist across logins, soulstone swaps, and skill changes. Even if you drop your skill below 90 (the active threshold for using a mastery), the unlock remains; reaching 90 again instantly re-enables the mastery's abilities.

Soulstone interaction

A character holding a soulstone with a skill above 90 gains access to that skill's mastery while the skill is on the character. Skill stones do not transfer mastery unlocks — those are character-bound. (Two characters that both unlock Provocation Mastery have independent unlocks; they cannot share or transfer.)

Mastery activation

Once a primer is read:

  1. Acquire (or already have) a Book of Masteries (general) or Book of Bardic Masteries (bards). Both books grant access to all unlocked masteries.
  2. Left-click the book"Switch Mastery".
  3. Select the skill whose mastery you want active.
  4. Confirm. Only one mastery is active at a time.

Switching has no cooldown; you can change mastery on the fly between fights, or even mid-combat.

Mastery Primer Books

Players accumulate primer drops across many skills; some skills (especially specialty ones) take many spawn runs before the desired skill rolls.

Mastery Primer Books can hold up to ~300 primers and stack across skill+tier dimensions. Same workflow as the Power Scroll Books introduced earlier. Players treasure these books on hot servers.

Primer trading economy

Mastery Primers are tradeable. Felucca champion spawn farmers often produce a surplus of Tier 1/2 primers for unwanted skills, sold on player vendors. The going rate (varies by shard):

Tier Typical price (mid-skill primer) High-demand skill (Spellweaving, Bushido, Pet)
Tier 1 100k–500k gp 1m–3m gp
Tier 2 500k–2m gp 3m–10m gp
Tier 3 2m–10m gp 10m–50m gp

The Tier 3 primer for highly-demanded skills (Spellweaving, Bushido, Pet Training Mastery) commands 5–20× the price of low-demand mastery primers.

Skills without primer drops

The 39 skills with no associated mastery (all crafting skills + many utility skills — see Skill Masteries) have no primer drops. The Champion Spawn loot table simply does not generate primers for skills that don't have masteries.
