Demon
Demon
A Demon in Ultima Online is both a specific creature (the canonical "Demon" or "Daemon" — a single named monster) and the name of a creature class that includes a wide family of fiery, abyssal, and lower-planar entities. The class encompasses everything from the early-game Imp to the late-game Balron to the Doom Gauntlet's Dark Father, and it is the target group of the Demon Slayer Super Slayer weapon-property. Demons are the canonical "fire-themed villain" of UO — the dungeon residents of Hythloth, the Lesser Bosses of Doom, the Champion of Champion Spawn Level 1 (Imps and Greater Mongbats) and Level 4 (Daemons and Succubi), and the antagonists of dozens of other locations.
The Demon class — full roster
The Demon Slayer weapon property identifies its targets as the broad Demon family. The complete roster:
| Class | HP / Tier | Notable locations |
|---|---|---|
| Imp | Low (~30 HP) | Hythloth Lvl 1, Champion Spawn Lvl 1 |
| Mongbat / Greater Mongbat | Low (~50 HP) | Common open-world spawns |
| Hell Hound / Hell Cat | Low-mid (100 HP) | Hythloth, Fire-Island region |
| Demon (canonical) | Mid (~250 HP) | Hythloth Lvl 2, Champion Spawn Lvl 4 |
| Daemon (alt-spelling, same monster) | Mid (~250 HP) | Common variant (the Demon slug refers to either spelling) |
| Gargoyle / Stone Gargoyle | Mid (~250 HP) | Hythloth Lvl 1 — also Repond Slayer applicable |
| Fire Gargoyle | Mid (~300 HP) | Hythloth, Volcanic-zone spawns |
| Gazer / Elder Gazer / Gazer Larva | Mid (300-500 HP) | Hythloth Lvl 3-4 |
| Efreet | Mid-high (~500 HP) | Fire Dungeon Lvl 2 — Demon-Slayer-friendly |
| Succubus | High (~800 HP) | Champion Spawn Lvl 4 (Semidar spawn) |
| Balron | High (~1100 HP) | Hythloth Lvl 4 — densest Balron spawn in UO |
| Unshacked Demon (sic — canonical typo) | High (~1500 HP) | Hythloth Lvl 3, named one-off variant |
| Impaler (Demon, Doom Lesser Boss) | Boss (~10K HP) | Doom Three-South — Mortal Strike, Bleed, Deadly Poison |
| Abyssmal Horror (Demon, Doom Lesser Boss) | Boss (~12K HP) | Doom Five-West — high Eval Int spell damage, Mortal Strike |
| Dark Father | Boss (~15K HP) | Doom main hall — appears post-five-Lesser-Boss-kill, Demon Slayer is highly valuable here |
| Semidar | Boss (~25K HP) | Champion Spawn Abyss spawn — Demon-class champion, drops Necromancy / Spirit Speak / Magery / Eval Int Power Scrolls |
| Mephitis (Doom) | Boss | One of the Doom Lesser Bosses |
Note on spelling: UO consistently uses two spellings — "Demon" (American) and "Daemon" (UK / Ultima-classic). The Slayer property is officially Demon Slayer; the creature class is officially called the Abyss group on the Slayer-pair table; the in-game NPC names sometimes use Daemon. All three terms refer to the same family.
Demon Slayer — the canonical anti-Demon weapon
Demon Slayer is one of the seven Super Slayer weapon properties — the most universally useful Slayer for endgame PvE because it covers Doom Gauntlet, Hythloth, Fire Dungeon Lvl 2, Champion Spawn Lvl 1 + 4, and Semidar Champion. The full Demon Slayer mechanic:
| Mechanic | Effect |
|---|---|
| Damage multiplier | 2× damage to any creature in the Demon class |
| Fear chance | Demon-class targets sometimes flee on hit |
| Pair penalty | The opposing slayer is Elemental — a Demon Slayer takes 2× damage from Elemental-class creatures |
| Holy weapons | Pre-AoS Holy weapons (Silver weapons) function as proto-Demon Slayers — same effect, classic-era origin |
Imbuing reagent costs for crafting a Demon Slayer: - 1× Slayer's Stone (Demon) - 1× Daemon Bone
These are obtained from Doom drops, Champion Spawn drops, and Demon-class corpse loot.
Demon-killer builds
The canonical Demon-farming templates:
| Build | Why it works |
|---|---|
| Sampire (Bushido + Necromancy + Chivalry + Tactics + Anatomy + Resisting Spells) | Vampiric Embrace lifesteal + Demon Slayer weapon + Whirlwind Attack = solo any Demon spawn |
| Mage-Demon (Magery + Eval Int + Meditation + Necromancy) | Energy Vortex + Earthquake against high-density Demon spawns; Wraith Form for mana-drain on hit |
| Tamer-Demon (Animal Taming + Animal Lore + Veterinary + Magery + Eval Int + Meditation) | Greater Dragon + Cu Sidhe pairing; pet handles melee while you cast support |
| Bard-Demon (Provocation + Discordance + Musicianship + Slayer Songbook) | Provoked Balron-on-Balron damage scales by the Demon Slayer Songbook 2× |
Hythloth — the Demon dungeon
Hythloth is the canonical Demon dungeon — its 4 levels are densely populated with Demons, Gargoyles, Imps, Hell Hounds, Balrons, and Gazer variants. Almost every creature in Hythloth is in either the Demon Slayer or Repond Slayer group, making Demon Slayer + Repond Slayer dual-weapon (or dual-Songbook) the canonical Hythloth loadout.
Doom — the canonical Demon-boss content
Doom is the canonical Demon-boss dungeon. Five Demon-class Lesser Bosses must be defeated to spawn the Dark Fathers:
- Impaler (Demon, Three-South)
- Mephitis (Demon, Three-East)
- Abyssmal Horror (Demon, Five-West)
- Darknight Creeper (Undead — uses Undead Slayer instead)
- Shadow Knight (Undead — uses Undead Slayer instead)
- Fleshrenderer (no slayer applicable)
For the three Demon-class Lesser Bosses and the Dark Fathers, Demon Slayer is the universally useful pick. (Undead Slayer covers the Darknight Creeper and the Shadow Knight; the Fleshrenderer takes no slayer bonus.) See Doom for the full encounter list.
Champion Spawn — the Abyss champion
Champion Spawn Level 1 (Imps + Greater Mongbats) and Level 4 (Daemons + Succubi) are Demon-Slayer-friendly. The Abyss Champion (Semidar) is itself Demon-class and drops Power Scrolls in the Necromancy / Spirit Speak / Magery / Eval Int trees.
The Demon (Abyss) ↔ Elemental slayer pair (see Slayer) and the Fey ↔ Demon (Abyss) pair are the two Demon-pair restrictions — a Demon Slayer takes 2× damage from Elementals; a Fey Slayer takes 2× damage from Demons.
Vampire Form — the Demon trade-off
Vampiric Embrace gives +25% damage taken from Undead Slayers, but a Vampire fighting Demons benefits from the lifesteal mechanic (20% on hit) — a Sampire wielding a Demon Slayer weapon against Doom or Hythloth has the highest sustained DPS of any solo PvE template.
The trade-off: Vampire Form has −25 fire resist, and many Demons (Balrons, Fire Gargoyles, Efreets, Doom's Impaler) deal fire damage as their primary type. For pure-Demon farming, the lifesteal more than compensates; for mixed Fire-elemental + Demon content, players sometimes swap to Wraith Form (no fire-resist penalty).
Counter — the Elemental Slayer trap
The opposing slayer pair is Demon (Abyss) ↔ Elemental. Carrying an Elemental Slayer weapon into a Demon-heavy dungeon is catastrophic — players take 2× damage from every Demon in addition to the standard threat. Verify the slayer property of every weapon before entering Hythloth or Doom.
Demon parts (loot)

| Demon Forks (item) | Cosmetic / quest |
| Pale Blue Talisman | Rare drop — Talisman with Demon Slayer property |
| Bat Wings | Necromancy reagent (Vampiric Embrace ingredient) |
| Pig Iron | Necromancy reagent |
