Royal City

A folio of the realm

Royal City

The Royal City is the capital city of the Gargoyle race and the political center of the Ter Mur facet. Introduced with the Stygian Abyss expansion in 2009, Royal City is the canonical destination for any character — Human, Elf, or Gargoyle — who wants access to the Gargish economy, the Mysticism trainers, the Royal Mint, the Holy City entrance, and the gateway to the rest of Ter Mur. Newly-created Gargoyle characters spawn here; established players visit for race-specific shops, Imbuing services, and the entrance to the Stygian Abyss Dungeon itself.

The city is architecturally distinct from the rest of Britannia — built around stone pillars, hovering platforms, and Gargoyle-flying-tier design that takes advantage of the Gargoyle race's flight ability. Some shops and NPCs are placed on elevated platforms that only Gargoyles can reach by air; humans and elves use stairways and ramps for the same destinations.

Getting to Royal City

The standard route from the mainland:

Step Detail
Recall to Britain Moongate Or any moongate in Felucca/Trammel
Step through to Ter Mur New facet selection in moongate menu
Spawn at Royal City moongate Moongate location is in central Royal City
Travel onward Holy City, Stygian Abyss entrance, Painted Caves all accessible from here

Established Gargoyle characters can recall directly via runebook to a marked spot in Royal City after their first visit. Human and Elf characters travel the same routes as Gargoyles — race doesn't restrict facet access.

Royal City layout

District What's there
Royal Plaza (central) Bank, Royal Mint, Healer, town crier
High Council district Royal Council quest hub; political quest-givers
Mage district Magery + Mysticism trainers; spell shops
Imbuing district Imbuing station; Gargoyle imbue gump
Throwing district Throwing trainers; Gargoyle weapon vendors
Bushido / Ninjitsu trainers Cross-flavored skill access for non-Gargish characters too
Stygian Abyss entrance The portal into the SA dungeon

The plaza-and-district layout follows the canonical "fantasy capital city" template — a central plaza with radiating districts each themed to a particular service.

Royal Mint

The Royal Mint is a unique Royal City feature. Players can:

Use Detail
Convert gold to gold cheques Standard banker function
Mint commemorative coins Decorative cosmetic items
Donate to specific funds Sometimes tied to faction events
Currency exchange For Tokuno coins or other faction currencies (in some events)

The Royal Mint is the canonical financial center of Ter Mur and a roleplay-flavored alternative to the standard Britain bank.

High Council and political quests

The Royal Council is a Gargoyle political body that issues quest-line content to players who arrive at Royal City. Council quests advance the canonical Stygian Abyss storyline — the Gargoyle race's encounters with the Daemon Lord and the corruption of the underground.

Council quest stage Detail
Initial introduction Royal Council awards basic Ter Mur quest items
Faction allegiance choice Player picks Gargoyle faction support
Stygian Abyss exploration Council guides player through SA dungeon stages
High-tier rewards Faction-aligned artifacts and titles

The Council is parallel in function to the Heartwood quest-giver Patricus — every facet has its own quest-giver hierarchy.

Gargoyle race shops

Several Royal City shops are race-restricted — Gargoyle characters can buy items that Humans and Elves cannot:

Shop Race-restricted?
Gargoyle armor / weapons Yes — Gargoyle-only equipment slot
Gargish recipe items Yes — some race-locked recipes
Standard town services No — bank, healer, etc. open to all races
Mysticism trainers No — race-agnostic
Imbuing station No — race-agnostic

Humans visiting Royal City can use the standard town services (bank, healer, etc.) but cannot purchase Gargish-restricted equipment.

Holy City connection

Royal City is the canonical entry point to the Holy City of the Gargoyles — a religious district within Ter Mur where the Gargoyle Avatar of Wisdom resides. The Holy City contains:

Feature Detail
The Avatar High-priestess NPC; questline source
Cleric NPCs Specialised healers and casters
Cleric-only shops Specialised reagent / crystal merchants
Religious artifacts Some artifacts are Holy City-quest-locked

Holy City is reached by walking out from Royal City through the western gate.

Royal City vs. Heartwood — race-themed cities

The Britannia roster of race-themed capitals:

City Race Expansion
Britain Human Original
Heartwood Elf Mondain's Legacy (2005)
Royal City Gargoyle Stygian Abyss (2009)

Each is the canonical home of its race, with race-specific quest content and equipment. The three are deliberately parallel — every player has a "default" home city by race and a parallel cross-race city to visit.

Royal City as a base camp

Established players use Royal City as a secondary home:

Use case Detail
Imbuing training Royal City is the canonical Imbuing training location
Mysticism training Mysticism trainers are clustered here
Throwing weapon access Gargoyle race-only weapons sold here
Stygian Abyss farming base Bank → SA entrance → return cycle
Kotl artifacts trade Eodon-region traders also operate from Royal City

For a serious Gargoyle Mystic build, Royal City is the canonical "home base" — bank, training, equipment, and Stygian Abyss entrance all within walking distance.

Lore

In canonical lore, Royal City was founded as the Gargoyle royal capital following an ancient civil war among the Gargoyle factions. The Royal Council chose the location in central Ter Mur for its proximity to the Stygian Abyss — the underground prison of the Daemon Lord. The city is canonically dedicated to vigilance against the Daemon's return, and the Royal Council's political agenda is partly defined by this watch.
